No it doesn't, tried that.

Anyway on your post about reading instructions.... ask / try first, last resort...read instructions

I noticed there is a small piece of plastic that stops the arm from being raised, it seems to move a little, so will investigate over the weekend to see if perhaps its on the wrong way or if all else fails if I can modify it to work.

I asked BMW, the answer was "errr, you just lift it up and unclip the blade" so not so helpful, but they did suggest I take it in and they can change the rear wiper ...... kind of missed the point

Is your G31 still under factory warranty? Wiper replacement is free here at the dealer.

No it's not expired November '23.

To be fair I'm happy to all things to the car, anything I can't I use a specialist to do. Not sure I would trust the dealer to even get the tyre pressures right let alone change a wiper

I know it was poo-pooed when suggested earlier…but did you check the owners manual built into iDrive, yet? I only ask because the iDrive owners manual is VIN specific…and unlike the paperback version (which is written universally) the idrive version covers the features the vehicle is optioned with and skips over features not optioned.

For example, the driver assist switch panel on my old 2013 f06 can have up to 5 buttons…all 5 buttons are covered in the paperback version. But the iDrive version skips over the option I didn’t have (night time vision):

Point duly noted, I'll have a look today as have the car with me.

Thanks.

EDIT - Okay, went throught the onboard manual, just tells you to lift the wiper to replace the blade, nothing else of any merit.

Hi Guys,

I just became a member in order to post some help (I hope)

Ran into this topic as I am struggling with the same rear wiper issue. Already on my last car (Pre-LCI 520) and now again with my current car (530e LCI Touring)

Walked through the whole in-car manual and it tells a lot about the wipers, but nothing about changing the rear.

however.... I am happy to share the solution with you guys.

I took off the rear wiper as mentioned above, and then I could see that BMW has mounted a BMW Bully Plastic Part. This can be removed and than you can just tilt the wiper as it should. I have some pics, but have to figure out how to share them with you.

Kind regards from the Netherlands,
Philip

Hello Philip ,

Excellent news and thank you for making it your fist post

I was going to investigate this weekend as a quick look revealed a plastic stop restricting the movement and I hoped something could be tweaked... now I know what to do.

I know that to make life easy you can remove the arm from the car to change the blade, but the reason to be able to lift it is to aid washing and cleaning of the window, and the wiper blade itself, seems bonkers that BMW didn't consider this...or maybe they did!!

Did you also know (perhaps you do), that if you open the rear glass you can rotate the wiper arm freely in its sweep ark, helps to clean the glass around the spindle. Just make sure you put it back in the park position before closing the glass hatch.

Chappers 71 Seeing as I dragged you into this info above to help

This is the plastic part I mean, which prevents the wiper from lifting:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/NVRx8s8N3a772zbc9

When you turn the wiper upside down, this is the little pen/pin you have to push out:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/jByzpzj6vmqyHEen9
(in order to get it out completely, you will have to use a small amount of force and some wiggling)

This is our little bully thingy:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/KQqPsxYRBaZq7WdZ9

After that it will be empty over there:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/LNs9YSjckv29sMEh7

And it wil lift (as it should in my opinion):
https://photos.app.goo.gl/iWYDtfp1Be9qPJg2A

Hope it helps out.

Oh, and.....
Please no comments about the dirty car it's snowy and freezing over here so no washing for now.

Removal of the part on your own risk off course... Wiper functions here without any problems now, just tested it. I can only guess about the "why did they mount it anyway" ..... maybe to prevent the wiper from lifiting in a carwash or something like that. (I'll stay away from the yes of no carwash questions)

Regards,
Philip

Thanks! Yes I did already know, but I'm not a huge fan of it. Still a challenge to clean the window at the very beginning of the wiper (or end) near the mounting part. Also, at my last car it only clicked back into its lock position after switching it on the first time, although putting it back in position manually. Didn't really like that as well.

Thanks for the pics and additional info...especially since those in markets like the US that didn't get the 5 series Touring. We had nothing to go on.

I wonder if that part was used to prevent the rear wiper blade from being pulled away from the rear glass & damaged during shipping?

Took off the rear wiper arm today & removed the piece of plastic….it still didn’t lift up, so put it back.

Had another fiddle with the rear wiper today. So just to clarify, to change the rear wiper blade…

You lift the arm as far as it’ll go without forcing it, no need to lift it all the way up & simply pull the wiper blade down from the centre whilst holding the arm & the blade will pop out, to refit just make sure it’s lined up & firmly push the blade back in
Easy as peas….when you know how

Agreed. Changed the QX60 rear wiper in literally 10 seconds. Pops off in a similar fashion. Pull off the hold the arm off the window, fold the wiper out, push down on the wiper with a slight twist. Pops right off.

And we all made a 2 page thread out of it if only there’s been some instructions in the bloody manual writing this I’m tempted to go & have a look on the I drive, but can't be bothered… it should be in the paper version as I suspect most G31 owners would be older gentlemen

The point of the thread was not only about changing the blade but being able to clean the glass in a simple way. If you came from an F31 you would expect it to be so, rather than a backward move. Think I may grab a secondhand one and see if I can modify it.

Wouldn't bother looking on the i-drive, just tells you to lift it up.

Well it passed a bit of time & I now know how to change the rear wiper blade…win, win

Have seen new F31 rear arm & blade for £15.95 on eBay, so not much money to give it a go, tbf I get your point about lifting to clean but after trying to lift it when I first bought it & thinking oh it doesn’t lift up, that’s a bit of a shit. I just would lift it high enough to get an MF towel under it, didn’t know that you could move the wiper with the tailgate open until I read about it in this thread
