I'm a potential first time owner of a used x7. Needed some guidance on making the right decision. I plan on going used above 2021 year models.

1. I'm confused whether to believe the v8 engine option is going to cause me a pain in the cheeks and the wallet vs the 6 cylinder. Heard some scary stories about the m50.

2. I'm super attracted to a used 2021 m50i but How do I know what kind of engine variant of N63 is in the car, heard some editions are better than others?

3. Is the fuel efficiency between the m40 and m50 day an night or negligible?

2. The M50i was perfected by that point and far superior to the earlier V8TT that sometimes would burn oil.

3. MPG is a negligible to almost non factor at this high performance and price point. No owner of a V8TT wishes they bought the 6 cylinder to save fuel. I drove 1100 miles in one day with the V8TT and fuel tank range or mpg was a non issue to cover a vast amount of miles in a short amount of time.

4. Certainly the pre LCI X7 is the best X7 variation with the most high output of air conditioning and cooling power. The newer LCI X7 climate control is a mess and severely hampered by a inferior design of vents and lack of airflow. The original X7 heated seats and steering wheel is also easier to control and pre heat.

Honestly the possible trouble V8’s are long before the G05/G07 X5 and X7. You are good with any. The big upgrade and GOAT was the M50i at 523hp. It is not a hybrid platform.

The picture you posted is not an M50i engine. It is a picture of a 40i, the B58 Inline-6 Twinscroll Turbo.

That said, any BMW V8 after MY2020 is either an N63B44TU3 or S63. Both have upgraded and strengthened components and as others mentioned, are perfected compared to the early Hot-V’s of the N63 line.

You do want an M50i over 50i though as these have additional stronger components shared with the S63 engine.

I have owned my 2020 X7M50i since August of 2023 and put over 15,000 miles on it since then. I have owned over 45 vehicles and can tell you without a doubt this was by far my best and favorite one to own and drive. The exhaust of the M is the most satisfying sound, better than my Vette, SRT Challenger, Mustang etc. It is the best overall vehicle when it comes to comfort and sport. Truly a Jeckyl and Hyde. I too was thinking do I "need" the V8. The answer is nobody needs it but dam once you own it you wonder to yourself what was I ever thinking considering the 40i.

I searched for over 2 months trying to find the perfect X7 and found it at a BMW dealer in Virginia. I bought it CPO and they even drove it up here and swapped it with my trade in. My advice is research the options you cant live without and go from there. My options that were a must have were the Bowers and Wilkins, Executive Package with Skylounge roof and crystal controls, suede headliner and captains chairs.

I just bought a 2020 m50i too.. I’ve been looking online for the ‘perfect one’ as well for me. I had to fly to Texas. Do you have a pic? I am in NC and will need to ship it. The dealer didn’t give me an option for them to drive it to me. grr.

Yes for sure. I was thinking pre-LCI gen only given he was looking for a used one. That said, I’m assuming (hoping) the new S68s will be even a step up from the N63 in terms of reliability (at least the ICE component of those). Since the engine design is largely identical but 80%+ of it are newer (better?) parts are used, the S68 might further refine any benefits of the N63 and have reduced any of the few still persisting hot-V issues.

Do you have a pic of what? My truck? I have purchased many cars from out of state and alot of the dealers have retired guys they pay to do car drop offs especially since covid.

New MY21 M50i owner here and it's very heartening to read that the M50i N63 engine is expected to be pretty solid. I thought I was going to be in a world of hurt from reading all the issues in forums but just found the M50i V8 too intoxicating.

I have a MY22 M50i with the same engine. I’ve experienced no issues with the car mechanically. I have 19k miles on the car.

On the X5 forum, I haven’t noticed any issues with the M50i. The only concern, for me and another member, was we needed our coolant topped up after the first 15k miles. Then the other member needed another coolant top up at 30k miles. I’m not there yet, so I won’t know if it’ll happen to me, but my SA said it was normal during my last service visit.

2022 M50 29k miles. We could have waited 30 days and gotten the LCI version, but knowing the 7 series’s type BMW is more a guinea pig of new tech and features I was worried about bugs. And sure enough, according to the dealer the initial batch had a lot of problems. So we feel good with our choice. Only issue I had was early in the ownership where the was steering column issue. It was a known issue and fixed. Initially it was a replacement but there was literally over 1000 vehicles waiting to get replaced and they figured out a path to repair.

No issues with the engine, changed out 1 pair of tires in the rear. Will probably be changing the front in spring.

We test drive the 4.0 and 5.0 … hands down was the 5.0 if your budget allows it. The car just goes when you step on it, no hesitation at whatever speed you are on. Awesome on the highway.

Can’t speak for the 4.0 mileage, on the highway I’m getting between 19-21 depending on how spirited I drive and purely city it 15-16.
