I live in NOVA and use shell and chevron when I can. I wonder if we filled up at the exact same stations if you would've had those problems and I wouldn't (my car is acting fine- knock on wood). I'm trying to see if it is something about the gas that causes the pumps to fail or if it's the way the part was installed/delivered (ie defects) that causes some to fail. |

Joining the HPFP "Failure" Club
2009 335i, production 01/09, experienced wonky starting then saw the dreaded "Service Engine Soon" light. Took it straight to the dealer, who confirmed HPFP failure. Fortunately, they seem to have replacement part in stock (hope it's "new generation"). This Service Advisor says it's the first 2009 failure he's seen and he was quite surprised. Oh....and maybe I win the prize - failure/warning light lit at 2,269 miles.

I had mine replaced 2 weeks ago at 2500 miles.
I asked the dealer to check out a weird idle and they later told me it's the fuel injectors. They called me later and told me they replaced the HPFP as well. Edit: I just noticed I replied to this thread at 2300 miles. I guess things can deteriorate rapidly. |

Just turned 1,200 miles today; I know because I just completed a thorough break-in procedure. I was actually pulling out of my garage to drive around the block, as I'm about to perform the car's first oil change, and it cranked for about 4-5 seconds. It's usually instantaneous. I'm now nervous...
My 07 335 never had ANY issues, whether it was -5 degrees or 100 degrees with high humidity, it ALWAYS fired instantly. As did this car, until today. My car is an 09 335 e90, 6-mt; 1st week of March build. Fingers crossed.... |

One explanation for the rise in HPFP failures is that oil companies are putting more ethanol or other chemical into their gasoline, than ever before. I don't have source for this though.

This doesnt seem to be as much of a problem in Europe. Im sure it still happens in Euro cars but the degree to which its happening in the US IS UNACCEPTABLE IMO. Without a doubt i believe its the difference in quality between US and European fuel regarding ethanol content.
Hope i havent just jinxed my car as ive done 2500miles with no problem and have a 10hr drive to France on Saturday!!! |

Yes, you can replace it. It's just south of $400, and you pretty much have to remove the intake manifold to get there. For a non-warranty car (like mine...one that has been modded), BMW charges about $1200 total for parts and labor. It is a faulty/defective product and BMW knows it.

I was just looking at this damn post yesterday and today start my car and:
SERVICE ENGINE SOON light stays on!! No long cranks, No shuddering, No noticeable loss of power/throttle response up to 4K rpm. Hopefully its a sensor problem or injector, cuz I really dont want to be part of this HPFP statistic.... 2009 E92 335i M-Sport Package. 1,260 miles. |
