Recommendations on compromis wheels/tires for Texas with occasional snow trips

Contemplating my choices for wheels and tires on a 2024 X7 I expect to be getting soon.

I'm going with the 22" staggered performance tires from the factory. Looks great, and I'm excited about that for most of the year in central Texas.

However, we also expect to be road-tripping in this vehicle, including to ski trips. I don't expect any snowy off-roading, I but do expect a fair share of plowed and occasionally unplowed snow when we make these trips, and of course temps that are typically in the 10's to 30's.

Further, since road-tripping to anywhere from central Texas basically means driving through spring/summer-like temps for hundreds of miles, even in the middle of "winter," I feel like I need wheels and tires that are a good compromise between summer and winter performance.

So here's where I think I've landed so far:
  • Get 20" wheels to ensure best performance in the occasional snowy conditions
  • Keep these wheels in a squared setup as opposed to staggered to allow rotations/extend lifetime and give maximum tire choice flexibility
  • Choose an all-weather tire that will perform adequately in all temps and conditions

So, questions to the peanut gallery:

a) Am I thinking about this right, in general? Is the plan sound?
b) If so, what wheel choices are going to be optimal for the X7? Note we prefer the chrome, as we did not choose the M Sport trim, but it isn't a deal-breaker if the absolute best wheel choice is grey or black.
c) Further, what is most likely the optimal tire choice or set of choices?

Any input appreciated!

get the factory spare.
if you have the space to store, no brainer to get a set of 20s with a good snow biased all weather tire- vredestein quadtrac or Michelin cross climate 2.

275/50-20 is a good size. the factory spec is 255/55-20
my winter set is 20X9 ET 22 with 275/50-20s but i run full on snows, vredestein wintrac pros.

our wheels are 5X112, centerbore 66.6. load rating needs to be up there are the rear axle weight rating is 4100. i think the rims i got were rated to 2150.
i got a set of relatively cheap aftermarket rims. figured they would get trashed in the winter

heres a thread where 20" snow/all weathers were discussed

Get the ExtremeContact DWS06 Plus set for your 22"s and the factory spare option for $250.

Edit - They don't show when you search for a set a 4 so here you go:

Thanks for the input!

To be clear, you're suggesting I _not_ get a separate set of 20's and instead just swap tires on my 22's? Or you're suggesting, beyond the question of all-season/all-terrains on 20's, I also get these tires for the 22's?

i would probably put those on the 22s. when the contis wear out (which wont be long) im going to get the dws06. but still run snows in the winter.

but it depends. the DWS06 plus is a uhp all season, its not going to have the snow ability of a crossclimate 2 or any other all weather tire.
its not a 3pmsf rated tire. its a dry and wet biased all season with light snow capability.

will that be enough for your use case?

I suppose that depends on your comfort level using these 22" tires instead of getting a whole other set of 20" wheels and tires.

The DWS06 Plus are snow rated (at least while the "s" is showing), and from reports are pretty good in the snow, but they still aren't a true "winter tire". In my opinion, unless you are in deep/heavy snow, you should be fine for the occasional trip.

Thank you. Curious why these two are considered top of the heap. I have seen a number of people suggesting these.

Thanks for the input. Is finding an exact factory spec match pretty difficult, hence the push to 275/50?

Okay, got it. I think it would be enough for 95% of uses during our road trips. I just might sleep a tiny bit better knowing that if want to go through a snowstorm in Colorado, I'm running on a 20" to get that extra traction through the mess. I think I'd be a bit nervous running on 22". So maybe running that tire as a 20", I'd feel fine. I don't think I necessarily need a 3pmsf.

there's no 20" spec aside from the OEM snow tire sizing 255/55/20
but thats meant for 8" wide rims which are more difficult to find.

Specification Sidewall Radius Diameter Circumference Revs/Mile Difference
275/40-22 4.3in 15.3in 30.7in 96.3in 658 0.0%
285/45-21 5.0in 15.5in 31.1in 97.7in 649 1.4%

275/50-20 5.4in 15.4in 30.8in 96.8in 654 0.5%

the stock 21s have a bigger delta

I see, did not realize the stock 20" was further off than the 275/50-20!

What calculator are you using to quickly assess all of these options in one pass? Or did you have to enter each one by one in some calculator and bring them all together here?

https://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

been my go to for years

the paper and pencil math isnt hard,

for example:
285/45-21

285 X 0.45 =128.25mm (sidewall height) X 2 = 256.5mm (total sidewall height
21X 25.4= 533.4mm (rim diameter)

533.4+256.5 = 789.9mm/25.4 = 31.1"

I'm also considering Michellin CrossClimate 2 to replace stock 21 285/45/21 Conti wears out. Anyone had experience with CC2? They don't have exact size of stock 285/45/21. What size should I get the closest to my current tire size?

A good friend of mine is a 20+ year veteran auto mechanic. He swears by the Michellin CrossClimate 2 tires. Both of my daughters have them and really like them. Unf they don't offer the 285/45/21 size needed for my X7, and I didn't explore getting a different size, so it was all season Conti's again for me.

the crossclimate 2 isnt avail in any sizes close to what you would need unfortunately.
you could do the vredestein quadtrac pro or PIRELLI SCORPION WEATHERACTIVE in 275/45/21, its within the range for OEM sizes so should be fine.
both are in the same league with the crossclimate 2

https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests...y.jsp?ttid=306
(the cinturato is the passenger car version of the scorpion, i would expect the results to be very similar)

Orient330iNYC apologies if I'm asking something you've answered elsewhere. I saw in a different post you referenced using the OEM center caps for your DR-76's, the larger sized 68mm. I'm assuming right now the same thing would fit the DR-81 if I get those (but will have to find spec on the size first...).

Do you happen to have that OEM part number for the center cap?

We did Quatrac Pros on ‘21s, so far they have been great, including recent ice/snow storm in Oregon.

assuming its the same as the 76:
36-13-6-783-536
you'll need to keep the outer ring from the drag centercaps. the drag center caps are two piece, the inner piece is the 68mm. thats what you swap with the bmw cap.

If you are only going to see the occasional light snow I would just get the spare and throw ExtremeContact DWS06 Plus' on your staggered 22s and call it a day.

Following back up for anybody else who may come along and be looking for the same information in the future...

I got the Drag DR-81's and the same center cap mentioned above fit them perfectly (OEM part number 36-13-6-783-536).
