M50 Owners - what's your reliability experience been like?

Still struggling to decide on warranty.

Wondering if V8 owners specifically can share what their ownership experience has been like when it comes to reliability?

How long have you had it? How many miles? How much have you spent fixing issues outside of regular maintenance?

I have a 2019 X5 50i with 50k miles. It has been perfectly reliable its entire life.

I have a 2022 M50i and it is almost 2 years old with around 21K miles and not a single issue. Standard maintenance 2x per the computer and nothing found, etc..

Tires I swap between summer and winter (all-season really) since we go to the snow to ski a lot and like many others the summers will be gone soon. I have about 14K on the summers when I took them off this last December and they are probably good for another 2-3K before needing a new set or just leaving the 21" winter set on (but I do like the wheels far more on the 22's).

Great car. Love driving it. I bought the 5 year (post-purchase from a recommendation from this forum) so I won't worry about anything.

Have a m50i from 2019. First owner and to date 40k miles.

Proper happy though following guarantee cases so far:
- change of rear differential. Started to show drivetrain error. Was replaced at cost of dealer
- rear hatch motors and button on the edge to open/close lower part were changed as hatch did not open properly. Again dealer cost
- steering wheel center piece (incl airbag) changed due to leather defect around BMW logo. Dealer cost
- tailpipe end covers changed as the black paint inside pipes started to peel; new ones are metallic w/o black paint. Again dealer cost
- 3rd row seats were not locking in place and couple times had to visit dealer; apparently software bug; this has not returned since
- drive assist stopped working and this was caused by defective side mirror for which the mirror/glass part was changed. Guarantee case again
- fuelling hatch did not open/close properly. Was changed on cost of dealer

So all in all - guarantee recommended or readiness to take some occasional costs.

Still happy with the car irrespective of above as it has all happened over 4+ years.

I think that’s an above average list of issues. Certainly more than I’ve had since 2019. But even so, none of those are engine related so not a data point for issues with the 50i/M50i engine.

I have 2020 M50i, 31k miles ... bought new and more than 3 years of ownership. I had posted lots of trip information here in this forum. No issues so far ... going great. No concern about the reliability. Planning to keep it for another 2 years

2020 M50i 17k miles 3.5yrs, other than regular maintenance the only issue was a small leak in the coolant overflow reservoir. They replaced it under warranty.

No fear coming off warranty, I will keep it at least until the 2nd generation X7 shows up.

not necessarily relevant, but from an m50d owner, its is has magically disappeared 1L of oil between services, and sometimes the rear seats get stuck open or closed due to what bmw said was humidity, i dont really understand, our car might have done 110,000 miles (converted from km) from 2019

You're saying those are the only issues you've had and you got to 110k miles? What year

It seems like it holds up really well during the first 3-4 years and 40k miles. I guess there probably isn't a ton of anecdotal evidence on 50-100k given the age

This is helpful, though

like the seats happened once and was covered under warranty (we had fertilizer in the back for our new veg garden)

the oil has happened 2x rn, but i dont know when it will happen again, its a diesal and all diesals do it so im not worried.

we hit a wombat (equivalent of a small deer) which broke the front bumper, but all the sensors and even the metal bars were fine at approx 65mph (100kmph).

thats about it. Not a single other issue so far. but it still causes everyone to sink into their seats once all 780nm of torque kicks in, and is still ave. around 7L/100km with 405bhp (with 4ppl in the car) on the hwy. full tank gives around 1100kms 80ish (85 L i think).

it is a 2019 year model, we preordered it cause we loved BMW at the time (GLS was aged, audi couldnt fit me (6'3) in the back seats like the bmw can.

2020 M50i. Bought used at 20k miles. I'm now at 60k with CPO warranty expiring this fall. I've had the following issues replaced under warranty:
-Fuel pump died
-Front differential grinding noise
-Steering wheel humming noise when starting and shutting vehicle off
-Rear Lower trunk Motor and hinges not working properly
-Whistling noise from driver side vent (comes and goes. Dealer has not been able to replicate, so this problem still exist today)
-Drive System Malfunction (goes away after restarting vehicle. Dealer software update. Haven't seen it since)

I'm thinking I will be replacing the m50i after warranty runs out, but so far, I haven't found a worthy replacement. I don't like the LCI.

On a different note, I'm keeping an eye on the new Audi Q9, and hoping they make an SQ9 or RSQ9.

2020 M50i, got it in 2020, 75k miles. Under warranty:

- Had the fuel pump die once
- Replaced 3 or 4 tires under tire and wheel because of potholes
- The auxiliary battery died causing a bunch of random electrical and computer problems. They couldn’t diagnose it and it only got fixed because somebody here had the same problem and I found their post

I’ve had to buy a full set of tires myself and replaced the windshield twice (the roads here are absolutely horrible). No engine or drivetrain problems at all unless you count the fuel pump, and I drive it hard.

How much was it to replace the fuel pump? Also do you know why it went? Do you run the tank close to empty a lot?

It was under warranty, I think it’s around $1400 out of pocket? No idea why it went and I didn’t know what was wrong initially, the tow truck driver said it was the fuel pump guaranteed and he was right. Said he’s seen it happen a million times on BMWs. I had literally just turned out of the hospital, we’re talking 100 feet down the street, to go pick up my son as my wife went under for spinal surgery so I was kind of distracted at the time.

I mean define close to empty, I usually refill around 80 miles left so 4 gal or so?

Thanks for posting the details. I usually fill up at the same mark. $1400 is not a cheap out of warranty repair!

I think an important note to make here is that once the vehicle is out of warranty/free maintenance you absolutely DO NOT want to be having things fixed at the dealership. It is imperative to find a great import mechanic that specializes in new BMWs. You’ll end up saving at least 50% of what the stealership would charge in my experience.

Any idea how much these repairs cost if you didn't have the warranty?

The way I look at it... I paid 60k for a 120k SUV... if I end up with 10k in repair bills (pretty unlikely), I'm still winning big time... I'd gladly have spent 70k and even much more than that for this vehicle, it's worth every penny.

Agree, 120k vehicle will never be cheap to maintain. On our 2nd X7 (first one was brand new, current one is CPO). I completely expected (and am ok with) spending 10k+ on maintenance/repairs over multiple years of ownership. However with tires being 2500/set, brake job 3500.. it quickly adds up. But yeah, as the saying goes you gotta pay to play.
