2021 x7 first oil change

Dad got a brand new 2021 x7. Never had a brand new vehicle in our life . What mileage would be the first oil change performed at? Can I get a dealer to do a break in oil change or wait until the first service the car recommends . Mileage is currently 900km.
Thank you

You’re first oil change will be at about 10k miles. Your X7 will keep track and will notify your dealer as it gets close. I believe only true M models get “break-in” oil service included in their regular scheduled maintenance.

This! It is best to follow the recommendations on iDrive. The general guidelines is just a way to know when to expect

Not sure if that is a b58 6cyl (40i) or not, but there is no way I will be following the 10K interval unless I was leasing and didn't plan to keep it. The oil filter is fairly small and tends to fall apart on extended intervals. I know BMW recommends 10K, but they also claim the trans is a lifetime fluid...just need to define what you see lifetime as being.

I will be performing my own oil changes at 5k intervals. FCP euro for supplies with lifetime warranty on anything they sell that can be returned (yes oil, filter and wipers too). Also interesting to note that 0w-20 is a North American only recommendation...but I don't want to start an oil debate. Invest in used oil analysis and choose whatever oil works for you.

Are you doing used oil analysis? If so, I would love to hear what the analysis shows after both 5K and 10K intervals.

Great point by bmanb2b, if it's a lease, who cares? If you're keeping it definitely change at 2,500 or 5,000 maximum. As the motor breaks in there are guaranteed to be fine metal shavings and other impurities being produced, and the sooner you get them out of the engine, the better.

I am and have for at least the past 15 years. Unfortunately, I don't have any to show you on a b58 at the moment, other than a UOA on my CPO 340, but that was with 1,700 miles on 0w-20 and of course no issues. I have since switched to 0W-40 and plan to do another UOA every 5K. I'm not against 10K OCIs either, but was more comfortable with that when I had my diesels. There are quite a few UOAs out there over in the 3 series and maybe even 5 series forums.

The main issues I have with a 10K OCI on a b58, especially the X7 is the engine load, turbo'd motor and a subpar filter element. All of which is fine if you are under warranty, but a PITA in the long run. I can change the oil in 30 minutes flat, but I also understand many don't have the space or means to do it, it just my personal preference...and of course there are going to be many examples in the other camp showing 5K intervals may be overkill

Can you change oil sooner for free in the first 36 months?

You certainly can, but it would be a paid-for service if I'm not mistaken, I don't think they will honor the free change until it's "due". This is one area where I liked my previous Acura dealer...they just had a policy that the first four oil changes were free...didn't matter when I used them...if fact they kept reminding me at 3,500 miles that I was due. It was a lease though so I just stuck to the manufacturer's recommendation.

If he's going to keep it, do one after break in 1,200 miles.

Non M-cars don’t have the 1200 mile break-in oil change included, but that does not mean you can’t do one for the same reason it is done on the M-cars. I did a 1200 mile break-in oil change on my X7 (40i). I did the DIY in my driveway as it is ridiculously easy on the B58 engine.

As I intend to keep my X7 for the long haul, I also intend to do DIY mid-interval oil changes at the 5k mile mark, just like I do with my M3 when I bought it new as well 4+ years and 50k+ miles ago. BMW will not do mid-interval oil changes as part of the included maintenance. They will only do it based on the approved factory maintenance schedule which is every 10k miles or 1 year, whichever occurs first - iDrive will keep track of this for you.

One poster above mentioned doing oil changes at 2.5k mile intervals above. Unless you are running the crap out of your engine at the track, every 2.5K miles is pretty excessive for modern synthetic oils. Even if you don’t want to DIY, many times dealers will have oil change specials that make mid-interval oil changes a no-brainer. My local dealer in MD used to have frequent oil change specials for $50 for any 6-cyl BMW - so deals are out there.

I chose to have a dealer to an extra oil, filter, and transmission fluid chanbe after the break-in, at 1200 miles. Had to pay for it. Definitely not included.
