Investment advice: buy a car?!

http://www.bmwblog.com/2015/07/18/20...ollectors-car/

I'm convinced that buying an E9X M3 was the right thing to do. It's safely in my top 5 list of awesome things for my entire life to date.

But as an investment? No. The interwebs are full of questionable advice and opinions, and buying a car as an appreciating asset - no.

Possible? Yes. But still no.

PS: Gas mileage. Checkmate.

There are many other investment options that will bring you a greater return than buying a car, collector's item or not. This isn't going to bring in millions in the future.

Also, by buying it as a "collector's item" you are probably not going to put any miles on it. Why buy a car and not drive it?

It's not a collector's car unless your definition of collecting includes high volume production vehicles that won't appreciate in value.

I think the only way you may be able to keep up with even CPI/inflation index is if you pick up an M3 GTS, CRT, (not lime rock park no matter how much you wish) keep it 100% stock and don't drive the thing. What's the point? if piss poor investment return is your thing, buy yourself long duration ten year US treasury.

You may only ever get back inflation adjusted msrp for it with low miles in ten years or so.

Buy a late model M3 with the transmission of your choice, enjoy it and keep it clean.

The only thing about the E9x M3 that is bad is that your rod bearings will spontaneously explode and potentially pierce your water heater in your garage, causing a massive flood in your home. Not good.

no way. The E9X M3 may be an investment in about 15-20 years, maybe 10. But it's still a depreciating rock today.

The 1M will be a better buy today than a M3 even with the looming M2 on the horizon.

A bit more than the cost to operate and own the car.

This is and always has been my number one concern. I'll be moving my water heater to the attic (at great expense) just to avoid this.

Ok, Le Mans blue is nice, but silverstone/palladium interior isn't highly sought after, is it? It won't be a collector's car any time soon.

+1

I was this close at buying a 1M. I just couldnt justify buying a tuned N54 engine.

investment and car do not go in the same sentence.

if your willing to hold onto a car for 10 years hoping, wishing, and praying it goes back up 3k, you're probably better off not investing period. because it is clearly the wrong mindset.

If you want a car that'll actually appreciate buy a S2000. That's a car that'll keep going up in price.

As far as e9x's go, I could see a ZCP sedan or a lime rock go for a bit more in the future but I doubt it'll ever sell for more than MSRP.

Basement? A very rare thing in South Florida, where the water table is located just 6 feet below the ground.

Oh yeah... Sometimes I forget about these things, or just assume everything is like where I live

I was out in AZ recently and the house didn't have a basement, after a day long monsoon storm... I see why. The pool overflowed and filled the yard lol

cars hit rock bottom then years later when half of them are trashed, and people start to show interest again. Thats how cars start to become worth something.
