Hmmm methinks it's more about marketing... most people want metallic nowadays, so by offering only one or two flat colours (many manufacturers now offer only one, I think VW's is flat grey ) the price gets levered up with the paint option!

Take VW & Ford who (certainly in the UK) now both charge for solid white paint!!! Not as much as for metallic but a solid white paint job costs them exactly the same as a solid red paint job!! Why have they started doing this... simple, because white has become more popular in recent years and people were getting it for free!! I'm glad to say BMW haven't yet jumped on the 'let's charge them for white' paint job rip-off band wagon!

amazing! You can say this is one of the most modern and cleanest production lines in the world compared to the segment competitors. When you think about that its the same production plant wehre already the E21 3-series was built, it is even more impressive to see the level of automatisation...

Also, setup for another color is costly too and most importantly, anything that is not part of the standard options is an opportunity for BMW to increase revenue and profit.
