Buying a CPO X& - 2019 50i vs 2020 M50i?

Hello,
I am trying to decide between buying a 2019 x7 50i vs 2020 X7 M50i, ,
The 2019 has 40Kmiles on it and priced at 60K, 2020 has 56K miles and is priced at 66K, - plan to keep it for 2-3 yrs ,I usually run 10K miles a year, ... wondering if I would loose alot more on the 2019 compared to 2020 when I sell after 3 yrs ,
thanks !

I doubt the loss would be much different, especially with the mileage comparison. I had a 2019 50i for 4 years and it was a gem. They really did that original model well. Had zero issues, and all the cool options were available then. My 23 M60i is missing a few things my 19 had because they just changed the options.

Are you buying it CPO?
at 66k did they do transmission flush, plugs and a few other maintenance items?
The 2019 at 56k would need those done soon too. which would be a few thousand if done at a dealer making it probably closer in price to the 2022.

The 2020 M50i has got the new motor. I have owned both V8TT. Get the newer higher HP M50i.
FYI: I own a 2020 X7M50i and plan on keeping it long term and I have zero worries with longevity or reliability.

I think it'll come down to options. If the 2019 has more options, then it's a better buy. On a different note, I believe the transmission fluid on the X7 is a closed system and doesn't need to be flushed/replaced.

BMW tells you it doesn't need service, but most people will agree that ZF (the mfg of the transmission) recommends fluid flush every 60k miles.

I think for me it would come down how optioned each one is. I used to look at 2019 xDrive50i M Sport models since they were easier to find fully loaded than a fully loaded 2020 M50i, but this was back in Mar 2020 - Nov 2021 (yes, I spent 20.5 months - every single day - looking for mine haha). From what I can tell I wouldn't worry about reliability - it would solely just come down which is more equipped, but that just might be me. And also, I think the resale value on the xDrive50i will be lower, but it might be worth it if it's more optioned as that would (for me, at least) translate into a better ownership experience in the time you will keep it.

I just bought a 2020 M50i yesterday. We were between new 40i or CPO V8. Get the V8!

CPO V8 over new V6!!! I was looking at a used XB7, and ended up buying a Fully loaded CPO M50i from the same dealer for $30k cheaper. Options matter to me.

I would say this 4.4 motor on both cars is not what you should be hunting for. I like BMW power but not coupled with this motor. Reliability issues. Wait for the S68 or get 4.0i with 3L.

Are you joking? What reliability issues?? Even the previous V8TT in the 2019 V8TT has been reliable. The updated (N63B44T3) 525hp V8TT that is in everything from the M850 to the M50i has been a reliable rock star. Even going into its tuning capabilities with producing significantly more hp it is been more than solid and reliable. The current M50i is the last true ICE V8TT BMW is producing.

That is a huge reason to buy one of these pure ICE V8TT engines. From now on you have a bastardized version of an ICE and electric motor now in the transmission. Meaning this over complicated marriage of two power sources working in tandem will brick your vehicle with the most minor fault code giving a “DRIVETRAIN MALFUNCTION” message. Reliability is going to be deplorable and you’re not even yielding any significant horsepower increases to beta test this new platform that was only developed to meet the new European emission standards.

I scoured the CPO inventory in South FL for a long time, went to Braman Miami to window-shop on Saturday (did not plan on buying a car until mid-summer), and purchased a vehicle with our ideal spec. I got 4k off what they were asking, plus they are refinishing the paint (black) and fixing a dent, replacing the radio presents panel which had a couple small scratches around the silver trim, plus it had brand new PZ4 tires put on..oh and only 18k miles on the odometer! I am happy with the value I received which is all I can ask for. They have been great to work with, taking delivery today!

They sell a lot of cars out of state so I would recommend purchasing from them. I can refer you if you'd like when the time is right. We priced out a new 40i before walking to CPO building and they were at MSRP for new, a little to rich for us now as we still have a Tesla lease for 1 year remaining (only need one car, both work from home), and moving into a new house next week, also with a baby on the way.

I walked from Braman when they sent me a PO with $1,000 doc fee.

Keep in mind that I say this as a guy that’s switching from 540 to M550, as we speak… But the I6 really is a fantastic engine. Super smooth and really surprisingly powerful. We have it in our X7 and it’s plenty for what we want it to be. I haven’t extensively driven a V8 X7, just a couple test drives. But I have to believe the weight of the I6 adds to the surprisingly nice handling in town.

But yeah… if it were me driving it everyday, I’d go V8. I’d go CPO V8 over new I6. But our X7 is for my wife, so we went with a very low mile 2021 40i.

And this won’t surprsie anyone… but we traded a brand new 2022 Lexus GX for the CPO 2021 X7 40i. The 6 cylinder BMW engine absolutely blows the doors off the Lexus V8. Hands down.

Yep…. Went with a CPO 2021 X7 M50i w/ DHP over a 2023 X7 40i (not by choice) and I’m glad I was forced to do it because the things I like most about my car is the power and the handling both of which I can’t get with the 40i.

I always forget about DHP on the X7 M50. I’m sure that negates the weight of the bigger engine.

I’ve never experienced DHP in any car. I just bought a 2020 M550 that has it, sight unseen from out of town. I’m excited about it. There are some negative opinions on it but based on the research I was able to do, I think I’ll love having it. Different type vehicle, but felt somewhat relevant given the discussion of V8 combined with DHP.
