Thoughts about tire sizes
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com I'm coming from owning a 2009 and 2014 MB GL550 with the 21" tire option and I will tell you they have been a royal PITA. You have very limited options and the options they have aren't the best. Plus, the camber settings on the GL are very aggressive leading to premature inside wear on the tires. Now don't get me wrong, I love the GL, but the tires have been my biggest complaint. A cursory look for tires in the 285/45/21 size aren't all that impressive. You either have a max performance summer tire with a treadwear rating of 220-240 (those would last long) or Pirelli Scorpion which performed very poorly on the GL. The only tire I can find in a 315/35/22 size is the new Pirelli P-zero run-flat. It also comes in a 275/40/22 so I'm guessing that is what will come on the X7 with the 22" option. Some of the pictures have also shown a Conti in a 22" so I guess they'll have an option as well. But with a staggered fitment, you can't rotate them so it will be interesting to see how they wear. I'm hoping once the X7 hits market, we'll see some other tire options pop up. But I would factor in tire selection/availability as a decision factor between 21 and 22. Right now it doesn't look like there is much selection in either. On my GL's, I've seen a life span of 15-18k miles. |

We have had 4 MB GL(s)350/450 though. We stuck with the 19s because of the premature wear, and lack of spare with the runflats on the 20 & 21.
I have 750 with 20” run flats now (staggered too). Only about 15k out of those. Had a sidewall tear and the car had to be flatbedded For that reason I am ordering the X7 non- M sport with 21” non RF |

ive got the 21s on a gl550 and use pirelli winters and the standard contis for non winter months. it works for me but is a pain to swap on off.
For me, easiest path with 22s seems to be the stock contis they are offering and then get a dedicated winter tire/rim set up. what is bmw officially offering for winter tire/rim packages? if you’re somewhere where winter isn’t an issue, the 22s and the space saver spare as backup will help you out of most situations but won’t resolve an issue of you being on a road trip somewhere and needing an exotic tire size made by at most two manufacturers like those 22s. For that reason I’m going 21” m standard wheel. Lots of choices in that size plus a serviceable all season option plus you can rotate tires since all four corners are the same size. But man I love those 22s!!! Last edited by ppagiga; 01-04-2019 at 06:18 AM.. |

My recommendation for winters for the X7 would be to look for a used set of 20" Mercedes wheels with a width of around 8.5" and maybe a 275/50/20 tire. 20 wheels are available as the standard for the x7 for markets outside of North America. |

If they did come out with 22" winters, you'd pay someone twice a year to take them off/on the same set of rims. I've done that, if it's a trusted shop it's fine. But there is a little wear on the rim and especially the tire itself going through that process time and again. If you go that path you'll probably pay call it 1600-1800 bucks for a set of 22" winter tires only. OR You could buy a rim and tire package from BMW. A dedicated set of winters with tires. If x5 are any indication, a 20" variant of this might cost about 3900-4000. So 2k more. It's not a pittance but it's not a ton. I'd rather do this than say get the crystal selector and the LED moonroof. Putting these on/and off every winter/spring should cost a shade less than option A. And it will give you better traction. A square set up with a less fat footprint is better for winter. |

Thanks for the insight! Hypothetically, if some all-season tire options for the 755M wheels were to arise and you could keep the same wheels/tires year-round. How would this stack up against having a dedicated tire-wheel set for winter? Is it advisable?

Honestly that size set up in winter seems a little crazy to me. I’ve done a square 21” set up before (295/40/21) and that was cool but a staggered set up with 275/40 and 315/35 seems like it would be silly. I think of it like this: the vehicle won’t look as great but will thrive with the 20” set up whereas the 22” winter set up would qualify as drivable

I’m gonna wait to see what bmw offers as bundles for a winter set up. Should know that pretty soon as an X7 accessories guide must be right around the corner |

Went ahead and ordered mineral white with the 755M wheels and also got a complete winter set thrown in for a significant discount (Y-spoke 752 black with Bridgestone Blizzak winters).

Haven’t seen the 752s or any others available for order outright. What’s msrp on those, per wheel?

Awesome, thanks for sharing. I wonder if these German spec wheels will have any compatibility issues on a US spec vehicle when it comes to tire pressure reading.

My order was exactly that same thinking. Given these heavy SUVs seem to go through lots of tires - I opted for standard but non run flat version so to maximize replacement options. My 2014 GL450 had limited options on the 19" and made a huge difference once I replaced the OEM ones...

Why would they put summer performance tires on any of these things!?!? I'm still baffled by it. It's nonsense. These new vehicles up north aren't taking any test drives in this! I wish they'd just give us all season performance on 6/7 passenger SAV. Would anyone object or complain if they did ?

I wouldnt expect many tires to become available. In the staggered 20-21" size on the X5 the choices have been crap forever. Mostly junk RFs, with maybe one good RF set and very few non-RF options.

Hey all I am new to BMW and this Forum. I recently ordered a Mineral White Luxury X7 with the 22" 757 wheels. I hate that there are no all season options available in the staggered setup. The issue as stated by shellbmb is the rear tire size, 315/35/22 , only have one tire option available, the P-ZERO summer. The front wheels with 275/40/22 tires have several options available, there are all season and winter tires available in this size.
I live in Houston and put a lot of miles on my vehicles and it will not be practical to change out these expensive tires every 15K mi, so I was thinking about ordering a set of the 9.5" (757) front wheels that will fit the 275/40/22 tires to replace the 10.5" rear wheels to have the same size 22" 9.5" wheels on all 4 corners. This would allow me to purchase high performance all seasons that can get me 30k-40K mi. In the long run this will save me a lot of money on tires and still retain the general look I am looking for with the 22" wheels. The only drawback would be losing the aggressive stance with the staggered setup, but this would only be noticeable from the rear of the car. I have not done any research yet to see if there are any technical limitations or if spacers would be needed or not but would like to get some feedback on this option. |
