CEL Codes - 2A98 & 2A82
Hey,
My car has been throwing CEL lights off and on over the past few weeks. I had my buddy at a local shop read the codes. Here is what I got: 2A98: NOT present crankshaft-inlet camshaft, reference 2A82: NOT present VANOS intake He said that the crank case positions sensor wasn't lining up to the inlet cam sensor. He said the inlet cam could be off a tooth from the chain, which I find hard to believe it would actually run. When I called him out he said the VANOS system is pretty good at adapting to make up for the timing difference. I have noticed it running differently with what seems like a big flat spot in power around 3k RPM not much power on the top end. Either way he said to fix it would be a considerable job and would be all labour charges. The thing is a few months back BMW replaced my lifters under warranty (which expired a last July....) and I think they somehow botched the repair. Does anyone else have any history with these codes, or have any thing else to add regarding what the codes actually mean? I am about to bring the car back to the dealer and ask them to read the codes and try and get them to fix it under the service warranty from the original work. |

Turns out it was a jammed vanos solenoid, which is a common problem. The dealer wanted to replace both Vanos solenoids and quoted me 260 for the parts and another 300 dollars for the install!!
Doing some quick searches I found alot of good info and it turns out all I need to do is remove the solenoids and just clean them (http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=486201) which I am doing tomorrow. I will keep you posted on the results! |

After swapping and cleaning the solenoids with MAF sensor cleaner and compressed air my car is running great! No more CEL lights!

That's good news. I went through a similar exercise recently. Different but related codes, that traveled from the intake sensor to the exhaust sensor (same sensor after switching). Removed the bad sensor, cleaned it with a ton of MAF cleaner, changed oil, so far so good.

Just wanted to provide some information to the community. I have had this issue for some time now. It was resolved in addition to changing the VANOS Solenoids, I changed both non-return valves located in the side of the engine head. The intake side seem to have been clogged.
