Question About Ionizer Function vs. Ambient Air (Fragrance) Function

For those of you that have the Ambient Air Package, is the ionizer function separate from the ambient air (i.e. fragrance) function via iDrive or do they have to work together? Also, do you only control the ionizer and/or ambient air functionality via iDrive or is there a separate button on the dash to directly control either of these functions?

Why am I asking? My X7 did not come with the Ambient Air Package so I am researching the feasibility of a DIY retrofit project. The project could be for the entire Ambient Air Package or possibly just one of the two functions, specifically the ionizer function.

Thanks!

DIY requires a lot of retrofitting and more than the build option. You'll need ioniser and ambient air glovebox:

I have already been to those websites as part of my initial research before I made my post . So for the most part, I have a good idea what this retrofit could entail. My question in this post was primarily focused on if the ionization function is separate from the ambient air/fragrance function inside the iDrive climate controls.

After looking at the TIS site, the hardware required for the ionization function is very accessible without completely ripping apart the dash and is actually pretty cheap (the ionization controller and two ionization emitters can be had for less than $200 total). I have taken apart my M3 for my dashcam install and also my dash and glove box for a Awron gauge install. So what needs to be taken apart for this retrofit, even if it includes the air freshener parts, does not seem that bad to me. Other than my functionality question above, the only real challenge for this retrofit (other than the cost of parts) is if the necessary wiring is already present and the coding required to get everything functional.

Great and to answer your previous question. The ionization is a separate function from the ambient air package.

Good questions, that I have seen asked before, in other models. First time I hae seen this considered specifically in an X7. As Auricom answers above, yes, ionization is separate from the scent part of the Ambient Air package. You are more than welcome to tackle your own DIY project, but what I'm recalling from other models is that trying to retrofit Ambient Air to a vehicle, after production, was unwieldy, not cost effective, and did not have provisions to readily allow this to be added, both hardware and software.

Certainly, if you do this project, let us know how it goes!

We'll see I guess as I am no super rush. After all, I have had the X7 less than a week so I am still in that new car "honeymoon" stage . Honestly, the real deal killer for me will be the wiring. If the existing wiring is not present, which can be hit or miss, I know I will NOT go through the trouble of running new wiring which I know would be a real PITA to get to the necessary modules. Fortunately, taking a peak to see if the wiring is present does not require much work....

Part of my research inspiration (and yes, I recognize the video is for a different model BMW, but it is obviously similar)...

This is a pretty old thread but was wondering if you tried the retrofit. I was thinking of tackling it myself.

Nope. I decided the juice was not worth the squeeze on this one…
