imagine a circle the size of a quarter and push in that area right above the lock on the filler door.

Same issue, but found the sweet spot. Thank god we don’t have to use the fuel filler much.

This could be your time saver. Please buy this and put it in your gloves box, you might need it some day. Picture below.
So, my wife call me. She could not open the fuel filler door. I told her many way try open fuel door but it's wont work. So I took off work and come to gas station where she need to fill gas. (She only had 1 gallon in SUV). Of course, I try it. It still not working. So I call BMW road assistant, I'm on the phone with them about 30 minutes to find the way open. They end up give me 2 options: 1st option They will sent people come and try to open it. If it get damaged it's on me. BMW will charge me for repairs. 2nd option they will tow my SUV and BMW dealership and they will fix for free. So I pick option 2 but I tell them pick up my SUV at home. Because it's 8:00 pm, it's cold, the dealership is closed, I just have enough gas to get home and that will be it.
I'm about to leaving the gas station, my mind just pop an idea, so I went inside gas station and borrowed it. It's working like cham.
Here it is:

Yup. I haven't put a hose in a tank of gas in years. One of the perks of living in NJ.

I’m not a G07 owner, just lurking around and found this thread. There is a PuMA measure for this so I’m attaching it here for you guys. The dealer should take care of this under warranty as it is a known issue. Hope this helps you guys...

PuMA measure
Fuel tank filler flap sticking
65308294-01 - 29/01/20

Complaint:
It is no longer possible to easily open the fuel tank filler flap by activating the PushPush function.
The opening force of the fuel tank filler flap is significantly increased or the fuel tank filler flap gets stuck.

Cause
The plastic material for the hinge arm absorbs water and under certain ambient conditions (high air humidity) can become deformed so that the designed fit between the individual components is no longer present.
This deformation is reversible if the component is dried sufficiently.

Measure
1. Remove the fuel tank filler flap (image 1) and check the white label on the hinge arm (image 2).
If the last two numbers of the above number (see mark in image 2) are less than 10, continue with step 2.
If the last two numbers are greater than or equal to 10, this service solution is not relevant.

2. Check the hinge arm is opening correctly by pressing on the ejector area (see mark in image 3).

3. Open the hinge arm and top centering support flush (image 4) with the aid of a sensor gauge (image 5).

4. Reduce the value measured by the sensor gauge by 0.7 mm, set the reduced height on the sensor gauge, place on the top centering support (image 6) and file off flush (image 7).

5. Close the hinge arm. The distance between the hinge arm and the housing (image 8) when closed should be at least 0.1 mm.

6. Blacken and polish (image 10) the filed centering surface (image 9).

7. Open the hinge arm. Measure the aperture for mounting of the ejector (mark in image 11) with a caliper gauge at the inner distance (image 12).

8. Enlarge the inner distance of the aperture by 1 mm by filing the inner support edge (image 13 and mark in image 14) without wearing away the ejector centre support (image 15).

9. Check the distance with another measurement (image 16) and compare with the previous measurement (step 7).

10. Place the fuel tank filler flap with the back of the fuel flap facing upwards on a non-scratch surface (image 17).
Place butyl tape (image 18) approximately 5 mm in length on the contact surfaces of the hinge arm (see mark in image 19) (image 20).
Repeat the step for the lower contact surfaces (image 21) (image 22).

11. Mount the fuel tank filler flap on the hinge arm and close.

Invoicing:
Processing and reimbursement must be conducted according to current warranty conditions.

Recommended defect code for GWK cases: 51 17 02 34 00
Stiff movement in the stop pad with ejector for fuel tank filler flap

The flat rate unit numbers and flat rates are saved in the
Commercial Service Data (KSD) / AIR systems.

Just had my dealer do this while looking at something else, it was just their second one, but it took them all of 15 minutes and it's working as expected now.

I'm assuming a new X7 coming out of production in March is not going to have this issue (i.e., white label last two numbers => 10)?

It might have it as the measure details state the affected vehicles are manufactured from 01 December 2018 but do not indicate the end date thus meaning the issue is still present even on the production line. It also doesn't indicate an approximate date as well.

Hi guys, was the solution sufficient enough for completely resolving it or it's just for "lowering" the PITA?

Because mine was RMAed two times and it's still kinda meh. My dealership cut off quite a bit of the lower tab and covered both the lower one and upper tab, as well as the spring/piston thing's contact point, with some kind of grease but you still have to push/hit quite hard to get it open (at least in compare to my F15 which reacts nicely even to a gentle push).

The grease is especially concerning because I don't know when (and how often) I should take my car to the dealership for refill...

There's an SIB on this issue. https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...72493-9999.pdf.

I had the problem and they tried to fix it twice without success. They finally replaced the entire pot and it works great now. However, they couldn't make the fuel filler door flush with the body panels and now it sticks out farther than it should.

They also buggered it up and put a dent in the body panel trying to replace the pot. They fixed that and you can't tell it ever happened but the fuel door still sticks out.

It's a shit design that BMW just can't seem to overcome.

mitch57 Thank you for the update! Actually I noticed your thread first but didn't want to spoil it (since it's specific). I feel your pain, it sticks out quite ... a lot.

Don't even remind me the SIB. I mentioned it, to have some background, as a BTW information to my dealer and of course it wasn't received well, I was even called "armchair philosopher" (they forgot to turn off my dashcam...)

Why do you think it works now? Is the design of the new door significantly different? (or it's just modified properly right away from factory)

I'm not sure. I complained about it but they insisted that every vehicle that gets a new Pot assembly winds up looking like this. It works as it should but I try not to look at it because it looks like a fuel door they would put on Yugo. 100K car that has the fit and finish of a Yugo. Way to go BMW!
