Just found this in the online manual:

Not compatible USB media:
USB hard drives.
USB hubs.
USB memory card readers with multiple slots.
HFS-formatted USB storage devices.
Devices such as fans or lamps.
Seems a bit odd, but ok, that answers that.

Im sure some of those can be coded. I know there was a specific setting for hubs. Let me look around for the others.

I assume the BMW screens only work?

Is there an adapter to allow one to mount an iPad?

I'd have to wonder also about plugging in a larger external hard drive, vs. a simple thumb drive. Conceptually, should be the same. But yeah... if you did want to make the external hard drive work, does it have a separate port for power, that you could run from a different outlet?

The post above is a 256GB SSD. It works for me. It even works through the hub in the second photo.

Sweet!

Sorry if I missed this--does playing video on the front screen (in motion or not), or playing those high-res audio codecs you posted, require the Rear Entertainment System? Or can you play all that stuff just as well, without the RES option on the vehicle?

It does not to my knowledge. I do not have RSE.

What format for a 256 USB Stick if I have some larger files (say 40-50 gb mkv?

I tried FAT32, but I get errors copying larger files, so I presume there is a file size limit for FAT32? Apple's format doesn't work...

What is recommended?

Thanks

Hey! Are you playing apple videos? We have apple TV's so we mostly buy our movies through there for the home. I have a firestick that I could use if that works. I could buy the flash drive, but I wouldn't know how to get my Apple media on there.

Do you think its better to just buy a Roku and use netflix and youtube tv?

I'd say this system is also perfect for ROKU. Plug in the ROKU in the HDMI and in one of the USB-ports for power and connect it via hotspot and there you have live TV...
Are you using the hotspot from your phone or from your car? If it is the car then we need to buy a plan

I have few issues and suggestions for the entertainment enthusiasts:

For those with toddlers, in my 2017 the solutions was to load a harddrive (I used WD 500gb which my new car doesn't recognize) with the movies. It would remember where it stopped and start at the exact same point during the next trip. In a 2020 I had luck with MP4, MKV and MPG videos and a smaller usb-c stick.

That being said,
-2020 doesn't read most of my movies the old car did (in .avi format despite it being supported according to the new manual).
-It doesn't recognize my 500gb WD (had luck with a smaller usb-c stick in exFat).
-It also doesn't update the USB library (you will see the list of movies that were on the stick at some point, but not anymore).
-Also instead of showing file names, it pulls out the movie titles. Perfect for perfectly organized videos, but in my case it looks very sloppy or even unreadable.
-Farthermore the hotspot through the phone isn't working great (pauses audio). I have purchased the Car's hotspot, but my Roku doesn't see it (Amazon stick does).

Any one else was able to connect Roku to car's wifi? Or install .avi codec? Amazon fire's Plex app isn't working, so I need Roku to play my .avi-s using Plex.

THANKS FOR THE HELP

I have a Firestick hooked up and I keep getting audio dropouts randomly when using the ATT hotspot in the X7. I went and bought a Firestick 4k and it does the same. Hope it's not something with the car. Just wondering if anyone else is getting dropouts for a few seconds every so often. Also this is with full bars.

How to pause videos and resume them? I couldn't locate any option for skip or pause except that I use gesture control to pause it. But if I move out of screen, I am not able to play from where I paused it .

So in order to watch movies on usb drives, it has to be in MP4 formats?

If so, how do you convert movies to MP4? most streaming services don’t let you save them in Mp4.

I’m already paying for disney, hulu, paramount, apple tv, netflix etc, which I can watch on my ipad (after downloading stuff on to the ipad), I have to get ROKU or firestick?

Seems like never ending format war.

I’m renting some DVD/blurays from the library for long road trips. It does limit what you can watch, but doesn’t require any conversion. Insert disc and watch.
