Do you run Waze at all (either through CarPlay or on an Android phone)? Waze traffic cam info in the DMV area has been pretty accurate during my time here, except for a small stretch on I-295 in DC between I-695 and Rt-50 - Waze has more traffic cams than what are actually installed on that stretch of road. It will be interesting to see how the BMW service compares to Waze....
I rarely run Waze or through CarPlay, and ja it does have pretty accurate traffic cam info. I'll launch it if there's a new destination I need to drive to but primarily stick to BMW's nav. I'm taking a drive around today in MD to see how well BMW's service works.
I use Waze most of the time but last weekend used the BMW nav for a change because I like how it integrates with HUD. However, it took me to three destinations that were no longer there.

Took a leisurely drive through North Bethesda where there's plenty of speed cameras. In all, the system identified all of the cameras with HUD notifications between 0.25mi to 800ft before the cameras and provided a 150 to 200ft range for you to immediately slow down.

No audible alert, prominent visual alert in HUD or in dash if you don't have a HUD.

Well that is unfortunate, as it should be easy to implement - including having the option to turn on/off an audible alert. But baby steps I guess as we can hope for a future software update. Now I have a new comment for my next post maintenance BMW survey...

Do you need to be actively using BMW navigation for the camera alert to work? Or will it notify at all times, similar time the speed limit alerts?

BMW is getting speed enforcement camera location data from a strategic partner and works all the time while driving around, GPS routing isn't required. It'll notify at all times and the earliest is 0.25mi away from a traffic camera enforcement location.

Unfortunately it doesn't display in the instrument panel if you have HUD and are using "Assisted Driving View". Such a basic function. If they can display the speed limit in both the instrument panel and the HUD why can't they display speed camera warnings in both places as well?

Ja, I use "Assisted Driving View" in my instrument cluster and I not sure I'd want it to display in both places. My focus is on the road ahead and the BC information (fuel efficiency, playlist, etc) that's displayed would need to disappear/reappear every time traffic camera alert comes on - I guide professionals in UX and UI design and it's just not good user experience. I assume that's what's happening with the visual BMW provided.

Since my G05 is equipped with HUD I'm unable to provide any UI and UX constructive criticism on the alert display in instrument panel.

I too prefer it in the HUD as well, and I also use ADV in the instrument panel. After using it a bit, my only criticism so far is a lack of audible alert. The HUD is clearly in my line of view while driving, but I actually missed an initial alert when glancing away for a second (but Waze alerted me in the background audibly). First world problems again....

But it did alert on both speed cams and red light cams that I am familiar with while I was out and about.

I completely agree that an audible alert would extremely beneficial as I admit to being a bit distracted in trying to take photos to document the new feature.

Luckily traffic was low and no cops around, haha. Better to get a speed camera ticket than get pulled over for distracted driving :yikes:

How hard would it be to put the same small icon next to the speed limit icon in the instrument cluster? This wouldn't be a distraction any more than the speed limit icon is. After all, many of us, me included, are of the old school where we still look at the instrument cluster and pay more attention to that then even the HUD. That comes from driving for more than 48 years where we had to rely on the instrument cluster for monitoring essential gauges for vehicle operation.

Also, if your focus is on the road, why would you need or want any information in the instrument cluster that doesn't relate to driving the car and traffic situations? I don't see how "Playlists", or any information that isn't related to the functionality/road conditions of the vehicle, belongs in the instrument cluster. "Playlists" are way more of a distraction than monitoring what and where your driving. My generation only looked at the instrument cluster to monitor speed, RPMs, fuel, voltage, oil pressure, temperature, etc. All crucial for vehicle operation. Playlists having nothing to do with any of that.

I would trade playlists, and any other nonessential "nice to have", yet distracting, icons in the instrument cluster, for icons and information that actually address the essentials of driving. The other information in the instrument cluster is just another distraction that has nothing to do with "Driving" the car and identifying operating parameters and driving/road conditions. The car telling me there is a speed trap/Red Light Camera is way more important in my eyes. All the other "nonessential" information should be relegated to the iDrive screen in my opinion.

Great points and discussion. I agree wholeheartedly with your suggestion of placing the alert next to the speed limit. You should send your perspective on how to improve Cockpit Drive Professional to BMW Group:

Truth to be told I'm a bit skeptical about it, but let's see.
where is the App located? i don't see it in my ConnectedDrive. I have 2019 x7 40i with 3/20.58 idrive software version.
It's in the Bmw store, google the app and it will take you right to it

Thank you for the suggestion. However, BMW's focus is most likely relegated to what the "Masses" want or what the bean counters and marketers tell them to do.

That being said, baby boomers make up about 25% of the US Population. Those of us who have been driving cars since our early teens, or even before in my case, have seen the evolutional migration and change from then to now. For example, touch screens can be very frustrating for some people. They're not intuitive and have steep learning curves.

Buttons/knobs/switches are important for many of us older folks because we rely on the physical shape and feel of the buttons/knobs/switches. Plus the added tactile feedback from knowing the button has been pressed or the knob has been turned. Memorizing the location/number of a button also helps you keep your eyes on the road. You can do it by touch instead of having to look at a screen and figure out what to touch on that screen. This applies outside of the auto industry as well. For example, I like a hard button remote for my home theater system so I don't have to look at the remote to change channels, FF, RW, etc.

I do think BMW has done an excellent job of providing "All" of the options for interacting with the technology. Voice, Gesture, touch screen, hand writing, and pushing buttons on the most important functions.

Hi Everyone,

I'm new here. I purchased the app online and received an email with the below instructions to install the app on my car:

You will be able to use this/these service(s) in your BMW with the Vehicle Identification Number ---------- shortly.

We recommend performing an Update Services in your vehicle to refresh the connection.
This can be done by following the steps below:
Depending on your vehicle’s Model Year and Make, navigate to “BMW Assist”, “ConnectedDrive” or “Apps” using your iDrive controller.

Under BMW Assist or ConnectedDrive:
- Open “Options” (physical button surrounding your iDrive controller).
- Click on “Update BMW Assist”.

Under Apps:
- Click on “All Apps”.
- Open “Options” (physical button surrounding your iDrive controller)
- Click on “Update apps and services”

Once the update completes, we then recommend shutting the vehicle off and allowing a few minutes before restarting the vehicle to check the connection.

The problem is I don't see either option ("Update BMW Assist" or "Update apps and Services") when i follow the above instructions. I see the "BMW Assist" and "Connected Drive" apps; I definitely do not see an "All Apps" option.

I have a 2020 M50i - does anyone know where I can find this update option?

Thanks in advance

I had the same issue but eventually figured it out. I'm not near the car at the moment, so if someone else doesnt chime in, I will post later on how to update it. I can't remember to type it until I look through the menus again. They dont make it clear I can tell you that. You will know when it is installed obviously, because it will be the last item under apps.
