YES, AT's HAVE OIL COOLER
Hey everyone,
I have an early 2007 335i coupe (was delivered state side in october) and I have both a transmission fluid cooler (its actually some sort of exchange radiator i think) AS WELL AS AN OIL COOLER. My car is also HIGH SPEED SYCHRONIZED. I spoke to the dealer about this yesterday, and it appears that possibly early deliveries of coupes with ATs AND WITH the sports package got coolers for both oil and trans. As far as whether the MT gets two, and the AT get 1, that I do not know. But I just figured I would chime in since some people were finding that they DID NOT have a trans or did not have a oil cooler. |

So far all the pics I've seen are of the front bumper. Granted the passenger-side grill is indeed split in two, with one side feeding the brake duct and the other going to the oil cooler.
But I was outside today and looked into the passenger wheel-well directly and the radiator - comprising the air-to-oil cooler - was directly visible, as seen in the attached photo. Am I correct in understanding that this is the component people are talking about? Car is a Canadian 335i e92 6MT.

I have a AT e91 with M package delivered to Norway, so if the posts stating the cooler issue is related to markets with warm/cold climates it shouldn`t be there on mine but it is.

I have installed fog bulbs on 4 e92's now, mine and three others. Two were manual coupes and both had the air-to-oil cooler in the front fender well, passenger side, right behind the fog bulb. Both AT's did not have this. If you open your hood you will see two rubber tubes coming up from the cooler and connecting into the engine, here is my engine, with lines where the tubes would be if I had the oil cooler. Obv I don't have the relevant tubing, since I have no oil cooler. As far as I can tell the *only* markets without the oil cooler are Canada and the US, and only AT cars. Why is this the case? I have no idea, probably cost savings. If my car overheats three times BMW gets to buy it back though. |

E-mail I received from BMW...
"Comments: Dear Mr. Hamil, Thank you for contacting BMW Canada. As of December 2006 production, the oil cooler is part of the sport package on all vehicles. Older production had oil coolers only on manual trans. Sincerely, Customer Care" That's just great. So only auto's produced between September and December '06 don't have the oil cooler; every other car does. Awesome. Good going BMW. |

Any chance BMW can cut me a check for the oil cooler portion that I paid for in the Sport Package but never received? heh

Ya, well I guess it'll be a wait and see thing. My car runs hot; not sure if I will overheat come summer, but I won't be surprised if I do. If so I'll just raise hell then.

I am going down to the dealer today to get an extra set of TPMS's, orange reflectors, AND going to see about ordering a complete oil cooler assembly to be installed...
I agree with picus; this whole issue makes me sick. I'm at sea-level; ambient temps between 65-75 degrees and without pushing it, the oil temp sits at about 240 degrees. When I'm stomping on it; it gets close to 265 deg...and that's w/o the a/c running AND it's not even hot out yet!! Can't wait for summer! Thanks BMW Last edited by OC ///M; 03-21-2007 at 09:52 PM.. |

Back in 2001, we all made a stink with BMW about a revised (Lexus-like) steering rack on the 3-series. BMW authorized free replacement racks for those who requested them. Everyone concerned about this issue should contact BMW and complain, perhaps they will retrofit (according to many an "easy" job) for those who request it.

This is why I refuse to buy the beginning line of any car, there are always bugs they need to figure out, but it sounds like BS to me that people are getting screwed out of the extra oil cooler for Auto's that were built in those time slots.
I will be getting my car in the end of 2008 (once this friggin lease is up), hopefully the price will come down a lil also with the new M3 coming out........... |

Just another data point -- my E90 ZSP manual has the oil cooler. I do not think it's an issue unless you are running at autobahn speeds.

OK...
I found out that the oil cooler assembly complete will cost me about $900. That's actually less than I thought...PLUS install. Anyone have any idea if installing this would mean removal of the existing "oil cooler heat exchanger system" or would it work in conjunction with it? Still waiting to hear back from the "priority email" it's probably going to just be a form letter like the ones already posted...can't wait. Thanks, OC kid |
