Great blog. How much of the time were you in ecopro v comfort? (Sorry if I missed it.) We get 24-26 mpg in our 40i on our road trips with about half the trip in ecopro, so the M isn’t too much worse than that.

As for the honking, we leave the phones and keys inside or outside to avoid this. It is a super annoying feature.

Just FYI, Colorado drivers already have some strongly held pre-convienced notions of wealthy Texan driver’s (in)ability to navigate windy roads. This ex-Coloradan included. I lived just outside of Telluride for a few years, and all the Range Rovers with Texas plates (there were a lot of them) would come to near standstill when they had to maneuver through a few bends haha
Heeeyyy…. It’s because I’m pretty sure our LR might blow apart if it takes a turn too fast on an actual mountain!

Okay - all jokes aside… great write-up OP! The X7 is on the short list to replace my wife’s LR next year… and tho we tend to fly to CO, we have discussed the option of road-tripping it instead many times (coming from DFW, it’s not a terribly long drive). Really appreciate the trip data and real-world feedback. Looks like it was a fantastic trip!

Pretty much Eco Pro the entire trip except when we were driving in snow or just for the in town driving.

Outside of pandemic times, we almost always fly and rent a car, but with this being three weeks and the difficulty in getting to Telluride we decided to drive.

Nice. We only use ecopro on the highway and about half the time. Exploring in the X7 out there is a dream.

Great post! I’ve been in awe of our b58 x5 coming from a MB GLC300 with a 4 cylinder. We too find the ride, power, efficiency, and powetrain smoothness of the BMW to be transcendent, really the best SUV we’ve had in a long list. I was able to shut off the honking stuff with Bimmercode app and obd2 device, thankfully. Buggy software is our primary complaint.

Hi Team,
We made it home, and I have some final MPG reports. You can view the Fuelly logs directly here:
https://www.fuelly.com/car/bmw/x7/2023/dbcoop/1163930

Here's the entire log, the last two fill logs was my morning fill up in Lubbock, and the final is my fill up at home:

You can compare that with our 2016 Volvo log:

Our trip is complete, it was truly the trip of a lifetime. We were fortunate to get so much time off work and we had a fabulous time. The X7 was a dream to drive, truly a remarkable car. It's not without a few weird annoyances around software, but pure mechanical parts of this vehicle are outstanding. I honestly enjoyed driving every mile and am so impressed by the power, refinement, utility and efficiency. I look forward to our next long-term trip!

As promised, here's a 17 minute video of (mostly my kid) shredding the slopes for 3+ weeks:

Nice! Your kid is a monster!

We got our first real snowfall this season where I live and last night I put my 2-year-old in skis for (roughly) the first time. Just towed him around the backyard a couple times, but step 1 is build the stoke. The goal is to eventually ski with him the kind of terrain that you two were doing.

Just take your time and make it fun! We took him when he was just over 3 and just did the carpet at Breck a few times!

Thank you so much for the post. I love these kind of complete experience posts. Years ago that is exactly what got me into Panerai watches. There was a website called paneristi.com where a lot of great "lifestyle" content got posted. Anyway I really enjoyed the post and all the details.

Great Posts, thanks for sharing! Just got an X5 M60i in same color as yours, Marina Bay Blue and love it. Planning a trip to Colorado in February and I go to Tahoe quite a lot, but haven't had the opportunity to test it on snow yet. I've got the same Bridgestone's in R20, how did the tires and x-drive perform for you in the snow/ice? Was planning on replacing them with the Michelin CrossClimate 2, but doesn't seem like I'll need to after reading your posts. Approximately how many miles did you have on those tires before your trip?

You may have said this somewhere but what tires are you running? TX to colorado. Do you have all season tires? Going from warm weather to colder.

I am picking up a used X7 in Dallas in 2 weeks and the car was a Florida car and has summer tires, 22 inch. I’m trying to decide if it would be fine to drive from TX to NC on those summer tires. If not, I will have to either get all season tires or put winter/snow tires on the 22 inch tires.

We didn't hit crazy snow, more just dustings or packed 1-2" snow. X-Drive and tires were wonderful, never slipped!

Yeah the OEM 21" A/S tires. Can't justify winters for once a year. I'd tear them up driving in Texas.
