Tesla, Mercedes, BMW, and many others actually use the same self-driving hardware and in some cases even the software. Not all of them use all of the available sensors, but Tesla is famous for using their own software exclusively.

I tried it out for the first time yesterday. It’s not my driving style. I had to take over a few times:
1) it can’t differentiate a school zone speed limit - weekend, lights not flashing, 35 instead of 45 plus a few. 2) slow approach to red lights. This is a pet peeve of mine, so not good. Meaning the car slows down well ahead of the light. 3) slowing to a crawl outside of the turn lane on a right turn after a light. Could cause a rear-end collision. 4) left hand turns are very slow and methodical. 5) big intersection, turning left on a green arrow- it wanted to go a little too straight and the car coming from the other direction was too close. 6) doesn’t head to the drive through for Sbux but to the parking lot. It’s impressive in some ways- right turns seem very safe and well managed. Going nice and slow over speed bumps. Quick acceleration. But not impressive enough for $12k or $199/mo. |

Interesting on the limitations noted. Recognize some of those could be dangerous. That said, it seems pretty amazing to me that a car can do that- even with those limitations/possible issue areas.
From a use perspective, I look at this and my aging parents and wonder if it will get to ‘good enough’ where they could use it to get around rather than having to drive themselves (and if not in time for them- then for me and my wife). It could help eliminate the ‘take the keys away’ discussions and still allow people the freedom to get to where they need to go/when they need to it (without relying on others). All that said, a perfectly functioning autonomous vehicle cannot perfectly predict what a non autonomous vehicle will do. Until all cars on the road are self driving- there will be unknown factors that could cause problems/accidents. That is unlikely to happen in my life time (and I’m not complaining about it). |
