Depends on what your value proposition or what you're looking for in your X7 and more details on the vehicles would be helpful provide with you with more contextually relevant thoughts or discussion.

Loaded 40i with features and amenities versus base M50i V8 power, M Sport design, and couple of optional features and amenities that are optional in 40i but standard on M50i.

MY20 or MY21 fully optioned 40i and base M50i? Is the 40i M Sport or xLine.

Test drive both and you won’t need ask this question. The M50i is a beast. The exhaust sound alone will speak volumes if you need this kind of power in your life.

MY21 40i M-sport custom build. I do like the power and sound of the M50 but if I were to option it with everything I want it would be out of my price range.

Then you got your question answered.
Options Vs power
Which one do you want more ?

I think you've answered your question.

If a M50i with a minimum of Vernasca, Executive Package, Driving Assistance Professional Package, and Cold Weather Package ($103,900 + 995 D&H) is more than you'd consider, get the loaded 40i M Sport.

While you would enjoy the V8 performance and sounds, you'll be missing out on the other aspect of your vehicle ownership experience which is enjoying the daily luxury features and comfort that the X7 provides.

I would take vinyl seats if it had a TTV8 like M50 over any other BS driver assistance option. No fucking way I pay + $70k for a 6 cylinder unless it's 911. Ever.

If you haven't driven the M50i, don't. Get the fully loaded 40i and enjoy the overall experience. If power is really important to you, then by all means grab the M50i. Personally speaking, I absolutely love the M50i and feel fortunate to have picked it up nicely loaded. It would be tough to give up. Good luck!

Currently in the market for M50i after I test drove both. Yes the M50i is awesome and I will be very likely buying one. HOWEVER the 40i is a very potent and, in real world, honestly nearly as fast. I was seriously impressed with the inline 6 and how peppy it is. I'm usually not the one to say it (having driven exclusively V8's for the last decade) but, in the X7, it's really hard to justify the V8 over the in-line six based on performance. As a side noted I wasn't a big fan of the V8 sound, it was much more "fake" than in my previous Audi's. 40i just sounded more like a natural 6, not sure if anything was pumping through speakers but I didn't notice it whereas in M50 it was very obvious (and one of the biggest drawbacks/disappointments IMO on the M50 - not sure if it had something to do with having the B&W audio).

Now everyone's personal situation is different and I'm still getting an M50i because my philosophy is since I'm already dropping 100k+ on a car, what's another 15-20k to get top of the line, bragging rights, etc. and by no means am I swimming in money but, if I was more cost conscious I would definitely just spring for the 40i. I know that's not what you asked but I would seriously consider getting a lightly optioned 40i m sport for around 85k MSRP (which seems to be the sweet spot for best X7 value IMO) and put the rest of the money towards PPF/wrap/ etc or save aside for the inevitable extended warranty (unless you're planning to lease of course)..

Whatever you decide, there's no wrong choice. Coming from many German and non-German vehicles and after extensively test driving the X7, it truly is the best in this class and you can't go wrong regardless the trim/options you pick.

If you really want the M50i, see if there are any slightly used models which interest you. Of course you will lose out on being able to individually option it, but can possibly find one decently optioned and discounted.

I wound up buying a fully loaded 40i M Sport. I was tossing up between that and the M50i with similar equipment, but decided the additional range and cheaper price made it the right choice for my use case as a family car. There are times when I’m driving by myself where I could enjoy the extra power and wish I went for the M50, but overall, I’m happy with my choice.

On the other hand, my car is currently in the shop for an electronics issue, and I’m driving an X7 loaner with only a few options. It’s like a different car. Not nearly as comfortable or luxurious, it doesn’t handle as well and the turning circle is noticeably bigger with no DHP, and I missed the driving assistance features on a long drive today.

To me, more so than with other cars I’ve owned, the options make this car.

The beauty of the X7 is it is 3 or 4 completely different vehicles in the personality and performance depending on how it’s optioned. I think the mistake is trying to lumping the vehicle into one narrative. It’s all what you want and can afford.

I'm wondering if the 48v mild hybrid technology in the MY21 will be noticeable
