OTA update to 11/2020.50

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Hi All,

I got a notification for an OTA update to version 11/2020.50. I'm currently on 07/2020.60.

I downloaded it on my phone and then uploaded it to the car using the connected app. Now it is stuck at this screen and does not continue with the update. It has been like this for two days now.

Please see the attached screen.

Can anyone help.

Park the car, engage parking brakes, shut off engine, go into idrive update screen and it should prompt you to do the update. Takes about 20 minutes. Did mine last weekend.

throughout the whole process the car has been in the garage with parking brakes engaged. I shut off the engine and back on a couple of times and nothing.

OTA update to 11/2020.50

Are you shutting the engine off and sitting in the car for a few minutes until the update initiates or walking away and locking the doors?

Did you go into idrive and pull down the alerts to see if there is an alert to install?

Also you need to be sitting in the car, doors closed (windows can be open).

If you don't see it in the alerts, then go into the setting in idrive, software update and select update from there.

I sat in the car with the doors closed for 2 to 3 minutes.

How long should I wait for?

There is nothing in the notification and when I go to settings all I see is the screen which I shared in my original post.

I have not been driving the car a lot. does it need to be driven for a while or anything like that before I see the notification?

As mentioned in the post above, go into the iDrive menu under settings. Then go to software upgrade. From there it should give you a status of your upgrade and if you can install it or not. Otherwise, give the BMW Genius a call or take it to your dealer.

Yes you need to drive it a bit, if the battery is below a certain charge, it won't do the install as it needs to keep power on for about 20-30 minutes during the install.

FWIW I did not sit in the car while the update installed from my iPhone to iDrive 7. My installation went off without a hitch.

Going from your phone to the car does not need your presence, other than leaving your phone in the car. But I still like to be in the car when this data transfer is taking place. However, when the car actually installs the upgrade, I would recommend you stay in the car to watch the upgrade process in case something weird happens. Even though technically you could leave your key in the car and walk away during the upgrade.

Call me old school, but whenever I do any type of software update - computer, phone, and now the car - I prefer to be present to watch the whole process.

Next thing to keep handy is how to manually put the car in neutral if the upgrade goes "worse case" bad and you need a tow to the dealer. Not hard if you know what to do (is essentially a screw on the side of the transmission oil pan) but I will speculate most if not all tow trucks/flat beds don't know this. Hell, for my last two OTA updates, I "strategically" parked in my driveway so a flat bed would have easy access to tow my X7 if necessary....

I was only addressing an earlier post stating you have to stay in car during the upgrade which as I stated was not required in my case. I carefully read and followed the onscreen instructions which did not mention sitting in the car as I recall.

To mmilano, you should call your genius for help.

My point was one needs to be in the car to initiate the update and can walk away once it gets started but I too watch it until the end to ensure I witness any issues during the process.

I was just hoping to avoid the whole going to dealership thing with the current situation. This negates the whole purpose of Over the Air if u have to take the car to dealership.

If I can get it to start I will happily sit in the car and watch the progress.

For me, the 11/2020.50 downloaded itself on the car on 3/25 but didn't give me option to install. Then on 3/27 I drove to see my parents (about 1 hr 45 minute drive) and as I pulled into their driveway and turned the car off, it popped up the option to install.
Prior to that, the car had been sitting in my garage for a few weeks. So battery was likely low and the nearly 2 hour highway drive charged it to a point where the system felt comfortable doing the 20 minute install.

Thank you. This really helps. My car had been sitting in the garage for a while as well due to quarantine and it looks like i am having the same issue.

I will report back.
