I recently got a 2020 X7 40i and am enjoying the wireless Apple CarPlay. I was wondering if there is a way to have multiple iPhones connected to CarPlay and to quick switch from one to another depending on who is driving.

I presume you disconnect Bluetooth to whoever is not driving and it will connect to the other. If both phones are active in Bluetooth it picks one

CarPlay doesn't offer that kind of capability that I'm aware of; however, I set the iDrive mobile connect screen to a memory button so I can quickly switch between devices when my wife/kids are in the car.

Do folks with 2020 have to pay for Carplay going forward or free?

I thought I read it's "free" or built into the sales price starting MY 2021.

BMW backed off of the subscription for CarPlay. It's free to all X7 owners.

Will give this a try. Didn't realize it gives you an option to switch CarPlay devices.

FWIW, I just spent 4 years in the UAE, saving up. That's what's funding the X7.

Dubai is beautiful. I lived there for 2 years myself. Not a bad place to work and save up. It will be well worth it once you drive your new X7

While that manual method would work, are bluetooth profile assigned to car profiles. That is when person a gets into car with their car key and it automatically adjusts to all their settings will it use their assigned bluetooth device (aka their phones car play even if person b is in passenger seat?)

And if person b gets into drivers seat another day with their key would and it thus loads all their settings, does it switch automatically to use their carplay (even if person a is in the passenger seat?

Or are bluetooth devices not connected in anyway to a driver's profile?

We get our X7 this week but thought I'd ask in the meantime and if not, the work around you suggested would certainly work for times when a spouse is in the car with their phone or of course for times, when the passenger wants to use their phone in carplay instead.
