I'm in the market (California) for a new M50i and there's a nicely optioned local one 2020 with MSRP of $116k. Pretty much exactly like I would spec it except for the exterior color. Dealer originally offered about 5% off but after talking to a few other dealers in the area one said he could get close to 10% off on a custom order 2021. Which is tempting given its a newer MY and I can pick the exact color I want...

I went back to the first dealer with the 2020 in stock and now he says he can do 10% off MSRP on that (it includes the 4K August incentive). My feeling is I should be able to do better on a 2020 given it's outgoing MY, no? I know the options have changed but doesn't really affect the car in question (no night vision, no RSE).

Seems crazy to go with the 10% off a 2020 if I can get close to that (say.. 8/9%) off a 2021? Especially given that I will be able to pick my own color, etc. Of course with the downside of having to wait... Am I missing something?

Would love to hear from others what pricing they were able to negotiate recently... also on custom orders, what seem to be delivery times now? On the BMW configurator seems like selecting certain colors shows a disclaimer that order can be delayed by up to 10 weeks. Anyone order one of the affected recently? (E.g. tartufo leather)

Order the MY2021. The build cycle is surprisingly quick... I ordered mine the beginning of July and it should be at the dealer this week.

If you can live with the color, I'd offer them 10% off MSRP (at least) + incentives. If that does not work, you've got the ordering option.

My friend ordered a loaded 2020 M50i (no RSE) for right around a 100k not too long ago. Mine was a similar situation back in April.

Depends if the options that are now deleted for 2021 are options you want. (night-vision, rear entertainment, ambient air, full glass controls). 2021 is a downgraded year for the X5 and X7.
A loaded 2020 X7 is a lot more loaded than a 2021. At this level of vehicle that means a lot to many. If you are not fully optioning one out then maybe ordering a 2021 might makes some sense. That said, ordering a vehicle through BMW can be a bit nerve-racking in the best of times. Issues like options that were deleted along the way and then giving you a credit at the time of delivery. In this environment I think ordering is a crap shoot at best. I personally value seeing and inspecting a vehicle before purchasing from everything including paint defects, scratches, etc....

Sounds like the dealer with the 2020 rescinded their offer for 10% off lol. I find it extra funny because originally when I came to see the car he said he would have no problem selling at MSRP. I thought sure, good luck with that. And of course 2 weeks later it's still there.

Anyway, makes my decision easier so I guess it will be 2021 order like many here suggested. Thanks for all the inputs!

Are you going to lease or buy? If buy, how long will you keep it?

If it's lease, MY won't make a difference. If you buy, it depends on how long you will keep it. I would depend a lot more discount on MY20 as its already 1 year old car. An used MY20 will be cheaper than an used MY21 with the exact same option/mileage/condition.

I'm buying and plan to keep for 6-7 years at least. Lease is not an option since I may have to go abroad and planned to take the car with me, which I can't do with a leased car. Either way I usually put on way more miles for a lease to make sense.

I ordered our X7 the last week of July and production began last week. I have a great relationship with the dealer and have been talking and debating the X7 since it came out, we were one of the first to test drive one when they got the first one. Really wanted the 40e but thats not going to be available in the US till next spring/summer, actually really hoping they ship us a 50d by mistake in my build lol. X5 lease is up in September, cant wait any longer and dont want to extend the lease as Ultimate+ containment is up and the warranty will be too soon. Built it mostly on bmwusa.com, sent him the build, told him I would come by in a few days, walked in said lets order it and give me 8% off MSRP, not a hesitation and we submitted the order.

Update: I was really close to ordering one like many suggested but due combination of factors ended up getting the 2020. The biggest being we just added a second set of twins to the family and waiting 2-3 more months for a bigger vehicle felt too much.

Overall I'm very happy with it, given I was only able to drive the 15 miles home. Got to try out the traffic jam/adaptive cruise and B&W audio, both seriously amazing. Needless to say I'm looking forward racking many miles on this luxobarge.

Now off to the detailer for PPF and ceramic coat. Will post more pics once she's done.

And starting quest for mods: not sure why but my wife really likes the red/blue m sport grill shutter thingies. I always thought it looked kinda tacky lol but if the wife wants it... also welcome to suggestions for good roof or tow hitch storage/box options. With 4 kids we are using all the possible space inside already so we'll need good storage solution for longer road trips.

Nice! You're going to love it. Such a great car to cruise around with the family and then have some fun when you're solo
