Anyone have any luck in the US with a Digital key?

Not sure if all X7s come with it but my loaded 40i came with it. It works well (ie not at all in the way). They do suggest you always carry a real key as backup, which negates the whole point of the digital key. I suppose on longer / x-country type trips you ought to carry one, but if you're <50 miles away and worst case is an emergency uber, it's not a big deal if it doesn't work!

They seem to require a subscription after the first year, but BMW is VERY vague about pricing of any of their connected services.

I got a digital key with our X7. After activating it I gave it to my son since he keeps our X7 shined and polished.
