Steering wheel Shimmy in Sub Freezing

I had a very slight shimmy in the steering wheel at about 50mph during the summer. Now that we are living in a frozen wasteland, I am not feeling it.

For the guys with the more pronounced shimmy, is it still there in the cold, or has it gone away?

I think I've noticed what some of you call this shimmy stuff, but its very slight, at that, but it seems like a possible inbalance in some rotating part...

I feel that, I also felt it in my e46. But only when its been sitting and cold outside.. After driving a bit, it smooths out. I assume the tires have a spot where its sit.. I have no idea, but it does go away for me.

The run flats tend to develop flat spots when sitting for awhile. Cold weather will cause the flat spot to remain longer after you start driving (takes longer for the rubber to warm up and 'round out'). That may produce a temorary shimmy, but if it you have it consistenty (usually 50-65 mph) then you have a balance problem.

There have been numerous threads on this subject, and I have had my share of problems with it.

I've noticed a slight shimmy in the car, but its related to the roads around here. I don't know how they do it, but whenever they repave a road, there are small ungulations in the pavement. They seem to smooth out after one winter though. With how tight the stearing is on the car and with run-flats on 17" or 18" rims you will feel everything that is wrong with the roads.

Never noticed that kind of poor road construction in any other area I've lived.

After you see the roads in other countries, you will think twice about what you consider your roads

Zep,
I noticed hot weather tends to make the tire flat spot, but it does not seem to happen on frigid days.
I know that you have been having issues with this, and was wondering if it subsided any with the cold.

Yes I know what you mean (I work with a large number of people not from the US, and some of the things they called cars were really amazing, let alone the roads). I was making the comment relative to the places in the US I have lived.

They actually had a news story a few months back on how the contractors doing the road construction were using sub-standard materials even to the point that some roads and bridges had to be re-done.

Moscow had a beltway recently added on par with US roads. This was about 7 years ago, if my memory serves me right. 4 or 5 lanes, exits, the whole nine yeards. Well aparntly after it was built, they uncovered the scam that it was made 1 meter narrower than it had to be. But when they calculates, it was millions of dollars because its all the way around the circumference. Laying down a 1 meter 50 mile (just a number) road is pretty expensive...
