Break-in Service resets 10K miles service?
For those that have done their 1,200 mile break-in service, does it reset the 10K miles service to 11,200?
Let me explain. On my F80, it took me 3 months to reach the 1,200 miles service (I work from home). On my G80, I am trending the same way, it may take me 3 months to put 1,200 miles on the car. The regular service interval is 10K miles or 1 year, whatever is first. On my F80, because I had done the break-in service at 3 months, my next service interval - according to the Service Advisor, was due 12 months after the break-in service, which does not make any sense to me. My expectation is that they should do the 1,200 miles break-in service, without re-setting the regular oil service interval. Please let me know of your personal experiences. |

I think that clearing the break-in service flag, should not reset the 10K mile oil service interval. They are not the same thing. The break-in oil service serves as the means to clean up any metal shavings or particulates from the new engine to prevent premature wear. This is not done because the oil is bad. |

I will have this conversation with my SA during the break-in service in a couple of days. He is a great guy, and have known each other for over 10 years. For once, I think I have a chance of winning this argument with him. This is my 4th M car, and we always have this convo during the break-in service. In the good old days, BMW even replaced the oil of the manual transmission cars during break-in. Those days are gone now. I usually flip the cars every 3 years, so is not a big deal, but it never made any sense to me the way it has been handled in the past. |

Saw a video of an M4 getting picked up from 1200 mile break-in and the first time they turned it on, it said 9,000 miles till next service.

Thank you for posting this info. Now I wonder how many techs actually know the difference between resetting the 1200 miles service vs resetting the oil service. |

Have break in done about week ago, my oil counter didn’t get reset, showed below 9k. Got me thinking for a min, but tech response in this thread helped clear things up.

I'm surprised by the early responses here. My 1st annual service was as of the in-service date, NOT the break in service date.
Got car Oct 2022, break in service June 2023, 1 year / 16k kms Oct 2023.

Did you read posts 2-8???? It wasn't until a BMW tech post #9 that the counter was NOT to be reset!
