Per BMWs CarKey page on their website, it appears as it's July 1.

Those worried if their new X7 build will happen before or after July 1st may be missing the point of my earlier post. I can accomplish the same exact function as the Apple Car Key in our 2019 X7 50i by simply using the Key Card that comes with the X7. And if you'd rather use your iPhone, simply put the BMW Key Card on the back of your iPhone inside your case.

But regardless, your new FOB will work much better because it uses NFC to lock, unlock, and start your new X7 with even removing the FOB from your pocket. When Apple Car Key can do that (and it likely will down the road), then it's worth worrying about. For now it's more hype than anything else IMO.

Don't sweat it if your new X7 is built before July 1st.

BMW Genius told me prior July 1 X7s would require a subscription where July 1+ X7s would be standard. Do they really know anything?

I don't think they do. I've talked to them a few times and I've come away realizing I knew more than they did... not so genius after all.

Straight from BMW.com:

What do I need for the BMW Digital Key?

The Comfort Access option (SA 322), active Connected Drive Services on your BMW, a compatible iPhone and an established link between your BMW vehicle and your BMW ID (via the latest version of the BMW Connected app).

The list of compatible iPhones and operating system versions may vary for different car models and software. You can view the list on the BMW website. You only need an internet connection to set up the Digital Key. Once it has been set up, no active internet connection is required in order to unlock the driver's door and start the engine. After you've opened the door, you must place your iPhone in the smartphone tray to start the car.

This is what the Genius line told me as well when I asked about this very issue regarding the July 1 cutoff.

How do you locate build date by vin. I jumped from third dot to done in less than 2 days. It was sitting on third dot going into July 1 and then now...

Yup. So frustrating to be buying a car and miss this by days.

Ouch, sorry to hear that man. That was so close that maybe you did get it. I'm not in production yet but I won't hold my breath on if it will be in the vehicle or not...: I guess with no vin yet I'm most likely after July 1st.

I wouldn't take delivery unless it's promised in writing to add the feature 😈

My 2 cents are:
1) from what I read it's the same process for Android digital key. Which I already have and it's 100% functional though only 1 yr subscription was given at delivery on mid March-20. So I'm 99% sure that most cars have the hardware capability. It's for Apple to somehow find a way to use NFC or add the hardware to its phones.

2) the key card given with the vehicle "imo" is as well another indication the cars are capable, as my phone works as a room key for most hotels. Substituting that similar card.

So it all goes back to whether it's going to be a free or payable option and what's the actually option that adds the hardware to the vehicle for such.

People with android please chime in and let us know how is that working for you. I only tried it with someone else's android on my car. And when I asked the genius, both on the phone and at the dealer while taking delivery, they were speechless and didn't know what that feature was. 🤦🏻

I have no idea what the implication of this is but on the BMW website it seems to have changed from "vehicles built from July 2020 or later" to "vehicles built from summer 2020 or later".
