What i have found is that most adults step around these sidesteps because they look too narrow and people don't want to step on them. So in the end they make it more difficult to get in and out of the X7.
As someone said, these are ok for kids.

Wish I could add it to the M50i since I have 3 small kiddos. Probably wouldn't order them if it weren't for them so I can understand why you would think that.

They do look a lot nicer than most fixed running boards though.

It is seriously interesting as to why isn't it possible on the M50i

How costly is "costly" to do the retrofit? Couple thousand?

I've been trying to find electric ones that open and close. however, the fixed ones should be a couple hundred to install and a couple hundred in parts. Less than $1,000; I'd wager you can probably get it done for around $600-700.

The electronic ones are harder to find. I'm still looking and it might be well over $2k.

I emailed two sellers on Amazon and received the same set of instructions to install the side steps. They’re not the clearest set of photos. It doesn’t look difficult to install.

I added the third link with instructions since it did not show via the bimmerpost.com web client.

Wouldn't the new trim pieces need to be painted? Seems a bit light if there's painting involved.

3rd party/aftermarket retractable side steps are installed under the vehicle:

I don't believe there are trim pieces that require painting.

Yes, they do do require painting (I have the OEM running boards from the factory) - at least if you want the original look from the factory. The painted parts are on the bottom and make up the rocker panel. Part numbers at the link below...

https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=51_A628

You can google the part numbers for prices. But it won't be that cheap of a retro fit though...

I confirmed with one of the sellers (SnailFly) that painting for their product is not required.

Sure, if you don't want it to look OEM, the rocker panel portion can remain unpainted - I am assuming it is black. If you check the lot at any BMW dealership for an X7 with the OEM running boards, you will see that the rocker panel portion is painted body color.

But just to be clear, are you talking about the OEM running boards or aftermarket ones? When I was doing research prior to my X7 purchase, I did find some vendors on eBay that sold aftermarket running board kits that looked like the OEM ones, but not quite...

When I get a chance, I will take a closeup pic of my OEM running to show you exactly where they are painted...

I'm not selling the product, just conveying what I'm being told. I'm not doubting you. This thread contains pics of a white x7 with painted side steps. Perhaps those on Amazon are not OEM.

No worries. Just want to make sure a fellow enthusiast makes an informed decision about a not so cheap part . Most likely, the vendor is either selling an aftermarket kit or does not know how the OEM kit is supposed to look. Not the first (or last) time this has happened regarding car parts, especially for a new car like the X7.

Do you still want to trade those running boards?

The side steps or running boards as some call them are a waste of money in the X5 and X7. As a matter of fact they make it harder to get in and out of the vehicle - especially if the car is dirty or has salt from the winter. My buddy has them on his X5 and we have to jump in and out of his truck to avoid ruining our pants.

What makes the x7 any different from other SUVs with running boards? I had a Merc GL with them and never had a problem getting in/out or with road muck.

To revive an old thread; has anyone had any luck adding Running Boards to a m50i now that a few years have passed?
