Display Shutdown

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
About once a week or more my display goes black while driving for about 30 sec and the radio shuts down. Then it comes back on in the startup display and the radio starts. Is that due to some update, or could it be a malfunction?

I had this exact thing before, the dealer can tell you what’s causing the system restart so carry it in.

In my case it was just my phone that was causing it after the vehicle had a software update. Fix was to delete the phone completely from the system and pair it again from scratch. All good after that, never happened again.

Unfortunately there are no helpful error messages to the driver as to why the system is restarting randomly but at least the dealer can tell.

Thanks. Does a factory reset from the menu disable any basic vehicle functions?

That doesn’t delete functions, just your info/saved settings.

You could try that first but it might just be easier/less time consuming to let the dealer tell you why it’s happening if you’re still under warranty.

Setting back up all your settings etc. might be more work depending on how many things you’ve saved. FYI the dealer will also most likely update your software to the latest version if you carry it in.

That sounds like it may be the problem I am having although there was no software update. I removed the phone and will see if that solves the problem. If it does, I'll add the phone and report back with the result.

A similar situation happened to me on the day when I went to pick up my new Mazda. After leaving the dealership...the radio stopped and the screen went black. It did this a couple of times in about 10 minutes (intermittent problem). So I turned around and went back to the dealer. They immediately took it to the service dept. It turned out to be a loose wire. They told me that it probably happened during shipping. I waited about an hour but it was fixed and it didn't happen again.

Thanks Brigitte. If the phone trick doesn't work I'll be taking it to the dealer. BMWs & Mazdas may have something in common

there is a second Hard reboot level beyond just holding down for 30 seconds. Genius advised me to hold down for 3 successive reboots in a row without letting up. Supposedly it triggers a deeper reboot on the system, YMMV

rjabend you issue sounds like your system is actually crashing and rebooting on its own which is not good. My bet is you either get the latest software or a new headunit

Had similar issue and it was caused by something wrong with the connection with rear camera and crashed idrive8. Service fixed the hardware and issue never came back.

Thanks! Now that you mention it, I had a few rear camera errors a few weeks ago. Thought it might be caused by obstruction.

I disconnected my phone and have driven quite a few miles w/o the screen going blank. it looks like ComingInHot may have identified the problem as being associated with the phone connection. I'll keep the phone disconnected for another week or so to see if the problem reoccurs. If not, I will hook the phone up to see if the problem returns. I have to add that the phone causing the display to shut down seems odd!

I was having similar shut-downs back in June and July until I took it in and they updated to iDrive 8.5. I haven't had any problems since, other than Digital Key Plus will still not install.

Well, I rehooked up my phone and after a couple of days, the problem is back. I am hoping 8.5 fixes it.

Mine has the same problem. I have 8.5. My Samsung S23 Ultra has issues with my vehicle with occasional phone connection and almost always Android auto. Causes a reboot sometimes. Resets, deletions, and all other possible fixes have not corrected the problem..

Do you have issues connecting to Android Auto? Mine is very quirky and hard to connect sometimes. It won't automatically connect so I have to manually which can be a challenge.

I only used AA a couple of times to try it out but I will let you know after using it more frequently.

Well, it definitely looks like a problem only when my Android phone is hooked up. It is a serious problem because my display content resets on the instrument HUD and user displays among other things when the problem occurs. It is hard to believe I have a $100K vehicle and I can't hook up my phone . . . . truly disgusting!

Any suggestions to correct would be appreciated, but I may start closing phone apps to see if one of those may be causing the shutdown.

This is BMW’s “New Coke” approach to the next design platform. It has to be to have way too many issues from a company that wants to “look” like they are designing tech forward thinking vehicles.

“Yea your entire display goes black at 70mph and you may or may not get an unprovoked “drivetrain error” that bricks your luxury SUV having you drive a 5 year old loaner car for a few weeks but BMW is in tune with their affluent customer base and they feel this is the image statement they want to make with a flagship BMW vehicle.…….”
