Angry 2024 X7 M60i Another Stop Sale!

I just got a stop-sale on a 2024 X7 M60i I ordered last month and was delivered to my dealer two weeks ago. When it first arrived, I couldn't get the car because it had a problem with the Driver Assistant system. That was fixed this past Monday and they said I could get the car today (8/25/23).

I was on my way to the dealer to pick-up the car and got a call that BMW had suddenly put a stop sale on the car, coincidentally on the very day I was supposed to get it. This time it was for a knee airbag issue and the dealer claimed they knew nothing beyond that.

Upon further investigation, I found that the NHTSA published, months ago, a notice of a recall order on many 2024 BMW X-model vehicles for a faulty knee airbag. However, the notice also said BMW was not going to alert owners until September 1st!! I guess it's not grievous enough a safety problem to stop current owners from driving their cars, but it is enough to keep new owners from getting their new cars.

I also found a forum thread that discussed the exact same knee airbag-related stop-sale, but back in May this year. That user waited a long time to get the part. I also read about one owner who brought in his car for service, the car was flagged for the recall, and the dealer would not give the owner back his car because of the recall. Beware of this happening to you!

Here I thought my car was ready for delivery and now I have no idea when that knee airbag part will be delivered and installed, especially considering how many cars are going to need that part. I just can't believe this dealer knew nothing of the knee airbag issue when they sold me the car just a month ago.

My feeling is they knew about it but wanted to register the sales to improve their sales numbers to corporate, knowing full well of the knee air bag issue. They knew buyers would be inconvenienced and even mad while their new car is sitting at the dealer waiting for a part.

Has anyone else experienced stop-sale this lately? Is your car waiting at a dealer awaiting the knee airbag replacement part? This is going to be a massive recall once the letters hit owners. Parts are already in short supply. I was counting on getting my car for the Labor Day weekend. Very frustrating.

Same here. Car arrived at dealer yesterday and was supposed to pick it up today. Just got a text from my sales guy this morning that they cannot release vehicle yet due to knee airbag recall.

Have you paid for your car yet? If not I don’t think the dealer can log it as a sale and intentionally withholding the car from you. Frustrating- yes, but pretty sure the timing and reasoning is less conniving than you may assume.

That really sucks and know the feeling. Something similar happened to me with a stop sale for the knee airbag at the end of July for a custom order. They were able to get the airbag part / fix installed within 5 days of arriving at the dealer. Hopefully it's fairly quick for you too!

I’ve got an M60i currently sitting in QC at the factory. I wonder if it’s waiting for this part?

I’ve been through BMW stop-sales before. If a new one drops, the dealers usually find out when they’re getting your paperwork ready for you to pick up the car. They don’t always get an advanced heads up; rather, BMW blocks them from assigning you the car. It sucks. NHTSA usually creates a case and then notices don’t go out until months later, once a fix is figured out. This is normal and not just BMW.

Trust me, your dealer wants to sell you your BMW. I’ll reach out to my CA and try to find out what’s going on. I see you’re in Chicagoland, which dealer are you working with?

FYI: I texted my CA about this. This particular stop-sale was issued on 8/24 and affects X5’s, X6’s, and X7’s with a production date of 8/2 - 8/16.

That’s good info. I have an m60i that got built yesterday (8/25) and went straight through QC and now waiting carrier assignment. Will see if there’s any delay to shipping/pickup.

I actually took delivery of my M60i on Saturday 8/26. Production date was 8/17 (per build order?)

The dealer actually made me sign a sheet among the paperwork stating that as of 8/26 there were no outstanding recalls on it. Maybe that's not unusual these days? Or could be a dealer thing, I can't remember without pulling out the docs.

So far, everything is ok. I have been some worried with all the stop sale reports (brake booster) but CA advised that was resolved. Didn't know about the knee airbag. What a damn pain.

Update: My dealer (Patrick in Schaumburg), finally got the release order from the mothership (9/1) and I picked up my X7 M60i on 9/2. That was the date the recall was supposed to be released to the public.

I still don't get why they issued the stop-order because the car may still have the defective airbag installed. Oh well. I'm just happy I finally got my new X7 M60i. Now the sunroof doesn't work.

I forgot to update this. My 60i was delivered to the dealer on 9/1 and picked it up on 9/8 due to the stop sale… I didn’t ask what the stop sale was but I assume it was this knee airbag issue. Vehicle exceeds all expectations and just got dropped off for suntek evolve tint on all glass.

Will get proper photos once tinted and detailed 👍
