Options for a Dealer mess up

I had my 23 X7 at the dealer for about a month for a part replacement under warranty. The satin silver strip on the driver side door has one of the clip broke and makes noise at high speeds. The service advisor called me today saying that the technician ended up denting and scratching the car (deep scratches) while replacing the strip and that it requires a full repaint of the door and fender (not sure why he ended up messing up the fender).

Very disappointed that a small repair ended up requiring repaint. As my car was ceramic coated I need to get this done again outside. Worried if they need to remove the door and fender to repaint and fix it back and it would cause any future issues.

Any suggestions on how to deal with this?

Fender needs to be painted to blend the repaint. My guess is they damaged toward the front of the door? They wont be taking the panels off the car. If they dont blend the repaint will stick out.
I would make them comp you for the ceramic recoat. If they polish the whole car in the process, the whole car will need to be recoated.

Most facilities would report the repair to Carfax. If that happens, the value of your vehicle will decrease. Also if the dealer couldn't conduct a simple repair without what appears to be extensive damage, can you trust them to repaint significant areas on the vehicle? If I were in your situation, I would consult an attorney. I am truly sorry to hear of your plight and wish you the best of luck in getting it resolved.

Yea, a Carfax damage report is the kiss of death for a new luxury vehicle.

Sorry to hear about this. Have you seen or been given any photos of the damage? I wonder if it's anything a good detailer and/or paintless dent repair expert could fix. Even if it's not 100%, it could be a better option than a full repaint.

Service advisor confirms it will not go into Carfax, will reconfirm again. What freaks me out even more is My BMW app is showing my car located in a Hyundai service center running a collision shop

This is what I got from the SA “ Yes, the whole door and partial fender. The scratch went through clear and your paint is a 3 stage paint. No it will not go on Car Fax”. It was not clear in the pictures he sent.

I would try to see it in person before you authorize any actions. The dealer is probably going to use its own dealer network shop (the Hyundai collision center you mentioned), which may or may not be good. If the repair is really necessary, you could insist on bringing it to a place of your choice and have the dealer insurance pay for it, but then it would be on the CarFax and you'd need to file for diminished value plus cost of ceramic coating. Or, you could let them try to fix it with the understanding that if you're not satisfied, it will need to be done elsewhere.

If the damage is not that bad or isolated to a small area, you may even be able to get by with a detailer or PDR specialist. A small slightly imperfect area might be a better option than an imperfect respray that affects a larger section of the vehicle.

I suggest you also, make sure ALL your communications with the dealer are in writing! If they haven't been, send the dealer a summary email of past communications asking for their concurrence.

Well, I have a Brooklyn Grey 2023 X7. Rear ended earlier this year. Required a whole new rear bumper and lower tailgate.

Dealer in Dallas did a full paint of the bumper and tailgate. Blended the upper tailgate and some of the rear quarter panels.
Dealer was a certified BMW collision center. I’m not sure what or why your X7 is in a Hyundai shop. Make sure it’s a certified BMW center.
I will say from experience that quality and customer service go downhill when engaging with dealerships that are multi-branded with the mid to lower tier brands.

I can’t even tell there was new paint and everything looked brand new when I picked it up. I also had Ceramic coating so got that redone on the painted parts shortly after.

I’m sure it’s in the carfax, but we’ll be keeping this for quite a while now.

Best of luck on the repair.
