Maps update via USB

Did anyone of you try updating maps via USB?

I've downloaded the app from connected drive website called BMWDownloadManager and when I try to download new maps it says that I have not enough storage on my hard drive. And I have 21GB free so I wonder - how much does it need? Do you know what file size is it?

I don't believe you can do usb software updates or map updates on the G05.

You need to login to the CD website and set your map region for automatic updates, these are then pushed over the air to the car automatically.

Never knew about the regions, looked into it and am curious now, if I want to get all regions' maps updated, I need to go to the dealer, but do I end up paying extra for it?

Well, I have this as a service in my connected website. See the attachment. Sorry for the polish language but it says that I may update my maps also by USB and it’s available for 3 years.

I have to download an app for my computer which I did but I can’t download the file because when it starts it says I don’t have enough space on my hard drive.

The update (EUROPE LIVE 2019-3) is 28GB. I personal use a 64GB usb to do map updates. I did the update of EUROPE LIVE 2019-3 last week.

I don't think the system lets you have more than one detailed region

For what it's worth...I just had an OTA map update for NE USA this morning. I have no idea when, why, or how it triggers....magic!

Yeah, I had one for Texas today. Map version USA is still 2018-4 though...I'll just limit my trips so I don't get lost?!

I wasn't getting updates and then found out that my region within the connecteddrive portal was set to the state of Ohio where the car was originally at bmw of Cincinnati, they traded it to Minnesota and I got it but the region was stuck to OH. once I changed it to MN online, I got an update in a day or two.

I am on Europe Live 2018-4 and dealer is not sending any updates out.

Is the hard drive on your computer full?

Yeah, I use MacBook Pro with only 128GB of SDD because I’m already used to keep all my work on cloud. I was surprised that the map file is so big (28GB like someone mentioned). I have about 25gb free but I’ll handle that.

You have to download to your hard drive first then transfer to a 64gb memory stick as a 32gb stick does not have 32gb of free space. I update mine by usb memory stick from time to time as the OTA updates only update your local region. In my case UK and Eire so ota does not update rest of Europe

USB updates are not an option in the US. At least not on my 2020 X7. I think this is a regional option.

Yes, the file is available (when ordered) in your connected drive

Maybe I forgot to also mention that the CD website of the dealer, can only list my name, email and the VIN of my car!

It shouldn’t be a dealer website but BMW’s. In Poland it’s BMW Poland who is responsible for CD website, not the dealers. I suppose it’s like that everywhere.

How do you know that you had OTA update of your map? When I select “update” in my iDrive it just show me the version of my maps, I don’t see any “check for updates” or something like that.

After an update is downloaded and installed, there will be a notification for it.

Just to sum this up, I finally managed to download the maps update and installed them in the car. Everything seems work fine.

I did it last week, too, no problems. It looks like Europe is on USB updates.
