I would think I'd be in the target demographic (late 40s, executive in financial services and technology) but I can't wrap my head around the design, accents and even the powertrain choice. There is zero about this vehicle that's appealing to me at all. The previous generation X7 looked great, the current X5 M looks awesome, this is just way too out there.

Am I just getting old / out of touch or is this targeted to another segment entirely?
Same profile here, literally
Enjoying my G82 M4 to the last bits, nothing seems to appeal me after it in the BMW new offerings

I've had a ton of M-Cars (E46 M3, E92 M3, E60 M5, E64 M6, M4 GTS) and then Range Rovers over the last two decades.

Until recently we had a '97 Defender D90 and an '21 XB7. I'd have loved to have another M5 but our daughter rides horses, we live in the city and I have to drive her out there a few times a week. Putting a ton of miles on the vintage Defender doesn't make sense. So we needed the space a large SUV would bring, but I still wanted the performance, hence the XB7.

We recently picked up a '23 Defender 90 as well so I can now use that to drive my daughter with her gear and here's an opportunity to get back into an M-Car. I love the XB7 but this bring the versatility of an SUV with the performance of a proper M.

And the electrification is nice. 50% of the time I drive my XB7 around the city (groceries, school, work, etc...) so being on battery most of that time where I don't need the power is great. I can then use all of it on longer drives on the weekend or when we head out of town. That's where the space matters again. We go to wine country in Oregon a few times a year, there's not that much space in the trunk of an M5.

I guess I could go the XM5 route but they're looking old as is the M5. This will be fresh for awhile, fun, and in trading in my XB7 the change in cost is negligible. As for all the other points on a Urus, or Cayenne, or G-Wagon. I dig BMWs. I'm used to them and I have a great relationship with the dealership so trading in or buying cars is easy. Maybe someday I'll branch out but this seems like it'll be a fun vehicle or a few years and then we'll see what's next!

Hope that answers the question.

With better wheel designs… and a whole lot of money, I'd hit it.

Hey, don't disparage the blind

I figure there are enough BMW enthusis out there like him that have similar reasoning. Add in the influencer crowd and the legally blind, trophy wife segment, and this should ironically sell fine. Even with the ludicrous price tag.

A lot seem to think you need to be a BMW enthusiast to like/buy BMW's but these days ppl are ready to fork out just to have something new that stands out, for the best or the worst.

These forums are maybe 1-5% of BMW buyers

I'm just astonished that the board signed off in this business case.

A reminder that we're all human and prone to our own biases and mistakes.

I am there too. Everybody has his/her take. That is what makes the world interesting. If everybody has the same views, it will be very boring.

You could add the G-Wagon in there, I'd wager that BMW had their eyes on that market.
I can't for the life of me understand why anyone would buy this over a G Wagon. BMW is in for a big surprise if they think they are going to take sales from that. Hell I'd take a normal G550
over the XM.
The Gwagen was still cool 15 years ago when it was still largely unchanged from the 1970s and a pretty rare sight.

Nowadays they're the Honda Civic for rich mommies and while I respect the heritage I wouldn't be caught dead near one. They got way too cool and the trend has naturally consumed its own cachet.

You are in the minority.

Boot Floor Heightq

I’ll throw out a crazy complaint. That floor height seems quite high. I like the split tailgate of the X5 and X7. More importantly my short wife likes those split tailgates. I guess room for the batteries?

I think the second worse thing after the exterior is the interior....they literally took what the X7 and X5 interiors look like now.

$180k and they didn't even bother to change the interior at all......

The X7 and X5 have nice interiors but not $180k Bentley nice.

Target group - at least from official videos - seem to be mid-twenties who don't have better way to spend their cash earned on IG, YouTube, Twitch and the likes

15 mpg 😉
I regretted selling my e93 as well. Glorious engine even without low-end torque, and that naturally aspirated V8 sound and 8400 red line made for very enjoyable driving at speed.

Over 160k for a car not even under 4 sec for 0-60?

I do not understand the logic here…..

I mean even 3 sec is not that impressive anymore….

You've provided a really thoughtful counterpoint and have consequently changed my mind on who the Gwagen is marketed to. Well played.
