I agree last year was light in the city and surrounding area as far as snow fall, but we drove up to Vermont / NH area a few times and it was helpful there for sure. Also, while it didn't snow a ton here, there's a lot of freezing rain and ice. Winter tires are for more than just snow - they're a huge improvement on ice and in slushy cold conditions (especially vs your summer 22s). |

I put mine on a few weeks back too. I'm in NY as well.
Last year I skated by without swapping out to a winter set. Yes, snow totals were light and temperatures were warm too. Plus, I mostly drove the x7 on weekends. It's not just the road conditions to be concerned with, its the temps too. It's not recommended to drive performance tires in temps below 40 degrees. I did not want to take a chance this year since I'm driving more. https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiret...jsp?techid=220 |

I usually swap to winters around Thanksgiving holiday week. Even If we don't get snow by then, I really don't wanna be driving around on 22" summers once the nights start dipping below 45 degrees.
This week will start to get cold in the Northeast so I think anyone running summer 22" tires should be flipping to winters ASAP. |

Every car is amazing with the right shoes. I've been running separate winter/summer wheels/tires for 30 years. Imho its the only way to go if you live in a snowy area. If you live in the more southerly states, then sure an all season is likely all you need. I also carry a plug kit for simple, nail in the tire flats, and an inflator.

it is always about the right shoes ... i drove my Fiat 500 to work today with 12 inches on the ground - no problem with snow tires - and watched many SUVs spin out on "all seasons"
in Germany by law you must change to winters - and in the US if we mandated this there would be far fewer accidents! |
