Dealer Service -Recall hopes dashed?
I have an 08 335xi with 80,xxx miles on her. So I have been experiencing the near random engine cut off that I thought was due to the HPFP failure; as often times is with our car. Along with this I figured I would take the car in to get the other recalls check (injectors mainly). To my surprise the dealer says that it is not the HPFP causing the engine shut down but the Vanos solenoids (both) need to be replaced (I thought that was mainly a problem on the N55). There was also no luck with the injectors either, they just said my intake valves need to be cleaned.
I'm pretty surprised/bummed that NONE of the problems were due to any of the recalls. Now I get to pay for those sweet diagnostic fees + the Vanos work and possibly the valve cleaning. I'm at work now, fearfully waiting on the estimate price. I just figured I'd post because this is the first I remember seeing where the symptoms weren't the usual culprits. Cheers |

I will go with 160 diagnostic, 450 for Vanos job, and 750 for valve cleaning.

sounds reasonable, my car went into limp mode at 44k and it was VANOS for the 2nd time.
What I've found with BMW: Warranty = 1st class citizen Extended warranty = illegal alien Out of Warranty = Donald Trump / red carpet treatment as you are a cash payer |

haha, yeah you guys were pretty on point. Just got the estimate. The diagnostic is 180 here but they checked EVERYTHING so I'm not too bummed. the intake valve carbon blast (which i'm assuming is fancy BMW tech jargon for walnut blast) is only 419 which I'm happy about and was going to have done soon anyway, and the Vanos is about 500.
There are other service they are suggesting of course, which is mostly rubbish. I enjoy performing any service I can (mainly just maint, oil, filters, brakes, etc). There is an oil leak however, I will have to wait to get that done/inspect that myself. Hopefully its just a gasket. |

Other than mileage, imho the intake valves would not cause the car to stall, did this car go into limp mode? Because VANOS does that. |

In the break down it did include the oil change. They also tried to tack it on at the bottom with the other services but that's not going to happen. I'm going to do most if not all of the other stuff myself if its not too daunting.
I think I attached the service estimate (its my first time trying it on this site) And yes it was getting thrown into limp mode, it didn't stall Last edited by nicholaf; 07-09-2014 at 10:29 AM.. Reason: limp mode** |

hehe microcabin for $120, I would do it for you for only $60 because I"m not ASE certified....
wow brake fluid $183. I need that now, and 2 yrs. ago when I called around? Indie wanted $140, and BMW wanted $120 less a 20% coupon.... What's the cause of the oil leak? |

they didn't "find" the cause I guess, that would require that service of $134. Then I'm sure they would charge me another price to fix it. I personally didn't see any oil on the engine since I bought the car about a year ago. I figured it was just a previous messy oil change the time since it didn't accumulate any more and I didn't see any spots on the pavement.

I found Vanos Solenoids on Ebay, Brand New.
The Ebay seller was BMW of Minitonka. 105 each. Took me 30 min to change them myself. your quote for 500 for Vanos is outrageous. The rest looks not bad. DN |
