Hi All, I just noticed my third row trim is glossy black yet my trim overall is fine line Blackwood trim. Is this normal? I saw a few 2022 videos on YouTube and seems that's the case. Do past 2021, 2020, 2019 trim for your third row match the front / rest of the car? I think I saw a few videos where it matched correctly. It's a small rectangular/ trapezoid looking shape.
Picture below is just a sample and not my car. |

Looking at the part diagrams, it should definitely match as that trim piece has different part numbers depending on which trim style your car has. Is it the same on both sides in the rear? Might be worth bringing up with the dealer at some point. Only thing I can potentially think of is that with all the supply issues maybe they went to one style for all models.

That would be strange if they put in piano black pieces there, as there is a cost premium for piano black trim. Always possible it was just a mistake, not a supply issue.

I just checked mine and mine has the matching fineline wood trim in the third row. Mine is a 2021 X7 M50i built in May/June of 2021.
Seems strange with these supply issues what is going on here and I wonder if these late MY2021 and MY2022 will be have a stigma of being COVID cars with missing features and now frankenstein trim. |

Mine also matches the front trim 2020 M50i…Ash Grain Matte Black with Bronze Effect. Maybe it was just a mistake. If you find it's cool keep it, if not point it out and I'm sure they can change it under warranty.

What's the rest of your trim?

As the trim pieces become available I'm sure the dealership will replace them at no cost to you. Talk to your service advisor.

I can't believe BMW doesn't tell you what's different in the car before you buy it and you need to find out yourself after. Really disappointing how they are handling supply issues if that's what's causing it. It is ruining my brand impression of them. At a very minimum, they should give The info in a spec sheet to all sales advisors so they can answer questions instead of being just as surprised as customers.

Just to show… I know I'm not crazy and at least one member confirmed with 2022 year. That's my third row below and my rear door trim. I'll call up the dealership where I bought it from. See what they say…. Probably easier to go in person and explain.

This is strange and actually a little concerning. Two people have now confirmed that in their 2022 X7 their 3rd row trim is shiny black plastic and does not match the rest of their trim. One a M50i, one a 40i. Having two vehicles seems to indicate it's not a mistake, so I'd like to hear what more 2022 model owners find.
As I mentioned, if that black plastic is actually piano black trim, that'd be extra strange as piano black has a cost premium. If it's just cheap black plastic for cost-saving, that's a real bummer. Unfortunately, I'm going to guess that these can NOT be changed out easily. I looked into the removal (and possibly replacement) of the front dash and door trim pieces, and they are not separate pieces that can be removed, like they are on my 330i. At the factory, those front dash and door trim pieces are affixed to the surrounding panels. The entire panel would need to be removed and replaced. Don't know what it's like for the 3rd row. Very silly.

Any clues for how to determine if my third row is piano black wood versus plastic? I assume a gentle tap and listen approach? Not that it really matters at this point...
And BTW, I got the exact vehicle I wanted when I ordered, so if this is the only "missing" item, I'm good. - HK - Touchscreen - DHP - Leather dash - Tartufo etc. |

2022 X7 M50i with August 21 build date and it also has the black panels in the back, that do not match the other trim. I never noticed until this post!

I took a good look at my black third row trim. I'll admit I'm not an expert on the piano black trim, as I've never had it. That said, this third row trim is high quality, nicely polished. Every bit as good as the trim around the second row HVAC controls. Is it piano black wood? I can't say.
