Is it safe to purchase a CPO with a replaced engine?
New member here. I have been hunting for an X7 and finally found one that I liked at a reputed bmw dealer in my city.
It's a 2021 xdrive 40i CPO with 40k miles in it. Yes, it is listed as CPO in the site and currently it's being certified. This is the same dealer who had sold this car and have been performing all maintenance. While negotiating price, the manager mentioned that they can't discount much on this car as it's worth even more as it has a brand new engine. I'm not sure if that's a red flag or not. The engine replacement was done a month ago. I checked carfax and I don't see anything yet. The car is currently being certified and I would be buying as a CPO though. I asked the reason and they spoke to service department and informed me that there was some broken bearing or rod issue that resulted in replacement. They said they can provide me all the history records once I complete the purchase. In addition to that, they also arranged to talk with someone called genius from their team. He assured me that it shouldn't be a concern at all. But afterall, they all are from one dealership. Is this a red flag? Should I be concerned? As per the dealer, it's a positive thing that a car with a brand new engine. I'm really confused. When I test drove, it was all good. I would like to know what you think. Ouch! I would not want that car. Hard to ever know the complete story. Think of a organ transplant. Yes, it is a new heart but who knows what complications will come with that. No thanks.

I would never knowingly buy a car with a replaced engine, even with a CPO warranty on it. Also, not being able to discount the car much because it has a "new engine" that was replaced is ridiculous.

"they can't discount much on this car as it's worth even more as it has a brand new engine"
That's supposed to be the other way around. You should demand a very deep discount, since they mentioned that. You never know what else is waiting for you.

Seeing how much they missed on this guy's "CPO", I would RUN away, not walk.

thats like saying a car thats been repainted is worth more because the paint job is new. utter crap. im also very suspicious that they wont give you the service records until AFTER you buy it (aka once you are fully stuck with it) the other thing is, bmw leases are 3 years. looks like the owner dumped it 6 months early, after two back to back service visits. bmw isnt doing a pull ahead, so it was either a trade assist or they ate some payments to get out. i would run not only from the car, but the dealer.

Pass for sure. I wouldn't consider it worth more if it had its engine replaced this early. Maybe if it had 200K+ miles and it was replaced with a lower mileage engine...but thats not we're talking about here.

For me, the peace of mind is most important. Not saying that other cars will not have problem. Yes, even the new ones do show problems if you are unlucky :-). But that issue you would only encounter only after owning it. thanks for your input. Im getting to see things in all the angles. |

I'm surprised they can CPO considering the engine was replaced. I once was in a similar situation with an X3 ages ago, they thought the replacement engine was a plus and same nonsense wouldn't budge on price. Replacement engine is almost like a rebuilt title in my eyes, you need to compensate a lot for me to take it.
My issues with replaced engines is not everything is always put back together perfectly, especially if re-using some original other things in the process. It will never ever be as good as if it had the factory engine.

Second the dealer comment.
I get the sales pitch about it being new and therefore worth more. I disagree with the thought- but they need to pitch this as someone will buy into it and take the car off their hands. I disagree that when someone balks at the pitch that they won’t play ball on a price as they know there are likely more issues. Even worse- refusing to share paperwork before the purchase. As much as I don’t trust dealers- this would be put me over the top for that dealership and would not go back. I’d always be thinking what are they buxxshxxxing me about the next car I might see on their lot. Will also pile on that it’s not worth the risk to buy this car with a rebuilt engine (even if they did share the history; though if they share’d it and talked price, I’d be more open to working with them on another used car). |

I would say the bigger red flag is the dealer, first trying to give you a line that they can’t discount because of the new engine and then being elusive on providing the service history. Also they’re supposed to already have inspected and have the vehicle ready to go before they advertise it as a CPO so another red flag. Can you pass on who the dealer is?

I have history with this dealer. I also looked at this same X7. I inquired about the history and they pulled it up immediately. I passed and I am in the process of purchasing another unit. I can say that they are hard to negotiate with in general and are pretty steadfast on their pricing. I have never received false or misinformation, at least not what I believed to be intentional. Nor have I felt like they were ever hiding anything. Like many here I would pass on this one unless the discount was substantial. Negotiate in a second year of CPO and a final year of a CPO Wrap and you may be on to something...
