I live in NJ and have to worry about snow from Dec through April. If you had to put on snow tires for 5 months out of the year would you just get an xi or stick with an x and just get snow tires?

I would get an xi AND use snow tires in the winter. Then you are golden.

I would only get AWD if I lived in a area where I really needed AWD. Snowy areas only. If I see a little bit of snow but not too much ice, I think I'd still have RWD anyway.

Central PA. i and snow tires works well. In fact I enjoy driving the car in snow.

This is always a hot topic around here, and it ends up turning into a lot of justification for purchase decisions that have already been made. My advice is for you to seek advice from serious/enthusiast drivers that you know.

And remember that the sales people will try to sell anything that increases their commission, which xi certainly will do.

nah. you dont need xi in nj. look at my sig. i barely owned my xi for more than 6mons. rwd plus blizzaks and you're good to go.

Assuming you'll be running a dedicated winter tire (and wheel) set then get an I as that's all you really need in NJ and nearby states. It's cheaper, supposedly has better handling, provides more fun during the summer, you get more and cheaper lowering options, etc.

If you were in Ohio or Colorado then an XI is really a must if you'll be using it all year round.

I have an XI (in NJ) and in 2 years since I owned it I never really faced a road condition where an XI would have been absolutely needed.

any pictures of 328i with aftermarket rims and snow tires?

The only worry that I have is that Ill probably get the cheapest rims available in tire rack with snow tires. The car will look pretty ugly during the winter time with 16inch ugly rims and tires...

In NJ RWD with snows unless your lazy then you can get the AWD with all seasons that way you never have to change.

But then you lose the fun of having summer tires in the warm weather which are much more fun then all seasons.

I personally would only get AWD if you are in snow conditions all winter not just 3-5 days a season.

Unless you have hills, and given that you don't have that much snow, I'll take a RWD. Consider that winter tires are not really an additional expensive because you save your summer tires.

Winter tires buy you 30-40% shorter brake distances and better handling grip, that AWD can not offer you.

Agreed, as well as you if you consider the $1200 premium for the Xdrive you can get a set of snows and rims for the winter that should last you a few years since you really only need them from Dec thru late March in NJ.

RWD and snow tires are just fine unless you live where they dont clean the streets.

Here the roads are cleaned pretty quick so i have no major issues.

Rest of the year RWD is more fun for me.

Winter time = ugly rims for me. I put away both sets of 19'' just because Im saving them for the spring/summer. Honestly I hate the look of my car with the 16''stock it comes with but when summer rolls around I'm sure going to be loving it when I bring out those 19''. I have a 328i and It does pretty well with all season tires+DTC when I need it..... so I can imagen the improvements with snow tires.

RWD + snows works fairly well, but after just one taste of oversteer (fishtailing) on a busy, snowy road, you just can't help but wish you had AWD.

That is from experience. Luckily I got her under control.

Oh, and the 17" A7 Sports from Tire Rack aren't THAT bad.
