When looking for a certified pre-owned X7 in the fall of 2022, I did a far amount of research into what is NOT covered by the the BMW Certified Pre-Owned Protection Plan as well as the BMW Extended Vehicle Service (EVS) Contract. I found it all very confusing.

With regards to suspension, below is is a summary of what I found. PDFs are attached so you can search/confirm for yourself instead of just relying on my conclusions. From my layman's reading it seems suspension items are NOT covered by the BMW Certified Pre-Owned Protection Plan or the BMW Extended Vehicle Service Contract. Perhaps third party Extended Service Contracts would cover suspension?

- In the WHAT IS NOT COVERED document for the BMW Certified Pre-Owned Protection Plan it says "Suspension: Ball joints; bushings; center tie rod; coil springs – sagging (except for leveling system pneumatic/hydraulic springs); control arms and brackets; idler and pitman arms; stabilizer bar links and supports; strut elements/shock absorbers (dampers); tie rod ends and adjusting sleeves; trailing arms, thrust struts; wishbones."

- Platinum and Platinum CPO Wrap Coverage Plans: "The following parts and components are NOT Covered Parts under the Platinum and Platinum CPO Wrap Plans:" section of the BMW Extended Vehicle Service Contract PDF says "Wear and tear items: All suspension parts and components" on page 11.

- Gold Plan: "The following parts and components are NOT Covered Parts under the Gold Plan:" section of the BMW Extended Vehicle Service Contract PDF says on page 11:
"a. Everything listed in Section VII (C)(1); and
b. Limited Electronic Accessories
c. Suspension"

Although as noted above, it does specifically say "(except for leveling system pneumatic/hydraulic springs)". Perhaps someone more mechanically knowledgeable than me can comment on whether or not that translates to "air suspension" being discussed in this thread.

Thanks for sharing!
Relative sure the air suspension covered by the 4 yrs/50k manufacturer warranty and not covered by the CPO warranty since that's drivetrain only.

If it is not covered by the platinum extended warranty, supposed to be covered by ultimate care+ as wear and tear parts. Weird if none of these two plans cover the air suspension.

Thinking about keeping the X7 for 2 more years after current lease so researching if it worth to have the extended warranty and maintenance plan.

If I replace an air strut "myself," will it need to be adapted to the system so the car doesn't reject it like a donor's kidney?

i dont believe the air spring needs to be coded. based on ista, its strictly an air connection to the air supply unit ( i just had my air compressor and one strut replaced due to leaking in cold weather)

That makes sense. I also just learned that BMW recently extended the warranty on the air suspension component for the BMW 7 Series SEDAN ONLY.

for what its worth, the air springs on the X7 are specific to the X7. but they are quite expensive, 3K each. my parts bill from the recent repair was 5K for 1 shock and the air supply unit. my guess was the total bill was close to 7 or 8K with all the shop time involved

i'm less than 2 years and 7K miles past delivery and already had a failed shock (to be honest its likely it was bad from the onset, it was just very specific circumstances that led to it being discovered now)

I took my vehicle in for a state inspection and mentioned the knocking sound coming from the front end when driving over minor road imperfections. Strangely, on that particular day, the noise had vanished, and even when I drove the vehicle with the service manager, I couldn't replicate the sound. However, the very next day, the issue resurfaced. Since my warranty will expire this summer, I'm considering purchasing an extended warranty. The cost estimates you provided for fixing just one shock were quite surprising!

Mine was making noise too, a clunk sometimes, i think on extension vs compression.Thought it was normal, its gone now that they have replaced the shock.

Make sure their covered. These are considered wear and tear parts on many warranties. Just saw a post on the extended warranty thread that they might be covered with the bmw platinum plan.

Good to double and triple check the contract if that’s a primary concern.

Will do. I just received a quote for the BMW platinum warranty 84 months and up to 100k miles for $14,400. 😂 insanity.

Shop around. There are a few threads with various contacts who will offer better deals. Mine was pretty significantly discounted when I bought it.
