Have 95k miles with ps2. Fix the oring leak on the turbo. But still burning 1 quart every 2k miles. Added some oil saver liqui moly see if that helps. At this point adding a quart of oil > rebuild turbo and downtime.

Buddy of mine in had the same issue you describe. It was the pure turbos. The turbos shouldn't be drinking oil like that.

Today I bought a viton o-rings, I'll try it, I'm sure they'll get along better than the OEM ones with the oil.

Viton is what I've been using as well as the OE O-rings definitely do not endure time well.

I don't understand the reason for not using Viton...

Reviving this thread - Here is my story and symptoms.

Oil consumption: First it was 1 liter/1000 Miles then 1 liter every 600 to 700 Miles
Vibration: One evening on the highway under normal cruising engine started to vibrate and has some codes saying some sort of orifice is clogged?? It said a generic thing like exhaust recirculation orifice is clogged.

Turns out 1-2-3 side catalytic converter is completely cruded.

Did anyone find out the root cause of this leak?

These were the codes:

Check if the turbos have axial play.

Tried moving the blades left and right laterally and it didn’t move. Probably needs a dial to move em. Rotates freely though

Totally agree on checking the Axial Play (in and out movement) of these turbos. This should be non-existent on a set of Journal Bearing Turbos, whereas some Radial Play (up and down) is normal (to a point). Based on all of the disassemblies I've done these S55 turbos are nice units with some fair power potential but the thrust bearings are not great for tolerating much abuse (ie. more aggressive tuning). After some time (especially if pushed harder) the bearings tend to wear out and that is the kiss of death for them.

If there is no axial play then the oil consumption comes from somewhere else.

Just wanted to add that what is in the GIF is a fairly radical amount of axial play, and it is a good example to show you a very bad case of the condition of the thrust bearings on the particular unit. So when you say "at least nothing like what is in the GIF" it could be relative, but if you feel anything (in or out) you have too much play.

Anyone know if the viton o-rings solve the problem completely going forward as well? Where do you get the viton o-ring specific to the compressor for the s55 turbo?

Thank you for the explanation. I wasn't expecting that kind of a play like in the GIF. I should have been clear. I didn't feel any movement at all with my hands/fingers.

Looks like this issue this a common occurrence with 1st turbo rather than the 2nd, could it be assumed that this is due to the PCV line connecting to the fresh air pipe of 1st turbo? Oil fumes deteriorating the seal?
Sorry guys, I sold my F80 and never checked to see if the oil contamination had returned after replacing the o-ring.
