I agree my wife and I was thinking hard about the GLS back in 2015 but decided against it because it gave off the minivan vibe. In order to give it more aggressiveness you had to get an AMG version and that really made the price jump considerably above the six figure mark. The 2020 gives the same vibe but maybe a little less than the previous model.

The handles are for holding on when it lists to the left and the right while turning if it's not equipped with the $9,000 "tilt-a-whirl" suspension package.

I get a minivan vibe with the rear and side profile of the GLS. Rounded soft inflated look with a lower frumpy rear. (see video)
The BMW looks more aggressive all around. The GLS/GLE has a very non threatening and vanilla look about it. I test drove a GLE450 and it was very disappointing. The entire vehicle felt budget built and cheaper made that the previous model. Plastic vent dials in the middle of the dash, etc... Power was blah compared to the 40i.

I believe these are GLS non AMG body kit models.

Good post with the comparison pics. I really prefer the X7 in comparison. The exterior is quite a bit more sporty. As for the interior the MBUX dash looks like an afterthought and poor integration. The four vent styling like other MB looks horrible compared to BMW as well. I do like the angular styling of the current generation GLS550, almost bought one in 2017. The BMW's interior appears to be miles ahead as well. Also, sounds like GLS will have mild hybrid systems and I want none of that shit. Not sure is GLS550/60 will have hybrid system?

X7 vs. GLS

I've owned BMWs since my first new 2002 right out of college in 1973, but I've also owned Mercedes since the first ML in 1997. Mercedes pioneered this segment, but both manufacturers make a good product. I just have stuck with Mercedes for my SUVs (have a GLE coming in 10 days) and BMW for my cars (currently an M4).

My opinions regarding exterior appearance of these two (not that you care ) are that I do like the overall angularity of the X7, but I think the kidney grilles are overwrought, more like the direction Toyota has gone. I like the squared off wheel arches on the GLS which are, oddly, more angular than the X7's. Overall I'd give points to the X7. Interior-wise, the huge GLS's MBUX interface is not artfully integrated, but as in the GLE it's pretty impressive in person to use. No good photos of the rest of the GLS interior yet, but the X7's is very impressive. At least in the GLE Mercedes is too conservative with their interior choices of upholstery, etc.

In powertrains, now that Mercedes has gone back to the straight-6 and added the e-Boost with 48v electrics, it has an advantage on paper in the 6-cylinder models, but BMW's six has been refined over so many years I'm sure on-the-road performance is very close. BMW has nothing to compare with MB's E-ABC suspension, but that's a very expensive $8k+ option that worries me from a complexity standpoint after warranty (but I still ordered it).

No wrong choice here.

If history is any indication, the driving dynamics of these two cars will be completely different. I've tried to like the previous version of GLE but it drove like a boat. Luxury boat that just wanted to float on the road and not get pushed hard. I guess if you are looking just for a luxury cruiser there is no wrong choice. But if you want to occasionally sprint or drive aggressively, forget about GLE (caveat is that I never drove the AMG version). I test drove x7 5.0 recently and it was very comfortable being pushed.

Mild hybrid

Mercedes (and others) is going this direction, which to me, seems all positive. A very simple system with 48v starter/alternator sandwiched between the engine and transmission. EQBoost adds 21 hp above the already strong 362 on the 3.0 L six, and 184 lb-ft for periods of time with very little weight. It gets rid of all the belts at the front of the engine and provides instant starting and allows a coasting mode. The upper levels also get an electric supercharger in addition to the turbos.

Autoweek says, "This new inline-six is simply fantastic in every Mercedes it powers." 2019-03-25

Your immediate dismissal shows you don't know much about it.

It depends on how you spec the GLE. There are potentially 4 different suspension systems: steel springs, Airmatic, Active Curve, & E-Active Body Control. While not up to AMG or M spec, even my '12 ML with Airmatic & Active Curve (dynamic roll bars) handles very well in Sport mode. Overall your statement has some degree of truth, but is over-generalized. There are some GLEs that handle better than some X5s, and vice-versa.

I actually love the mild-hybrid system, it means I don't need to turn off auto-stop-start every time I turn on the car, system works a lot better since it provides enough torque low down and quick enough to move and start the car without it feeling awkward or rough.

It's more a matter of taste, but the new (X5 & X7) M50i will be fantastic!
I am thinking that we'll see an X7M too... the SUV market can't be ingored in this period 😁

The new GLS looks nice but a bit plain. There will be a new GLS 580 (replacing the previous GLS 550) that should have a more aggressive looking grill and wheels. When they get around to unveiling the AMG GLS 63, that will tell the tale for the new GLS. So far it looks like a stretched GLE.

Their next generation S class looks interesting based on a few spy photos. They are taking their dash design in a different direction. There will be separate cockpit and infotainment screens. The cockpit screen looks to be 12.3" and the new infotainment screen will be huge, looks larger than the 12.9" iPad Pro, reminiscent of the Tesla sedan.

Their sedans in my opinion always look better than their SUVs, much prefer the looks of the C,E,S, and CLS, although... I am a bit biased

Going to hold judgement until I actually see them in person. I certainly didn't like the X7 from initial internet pics, then my tune changed drastically when I saw a few in person. So chances are the new GLS will also look much better than the initial pics suggest.

That, I do agree with.

And again... Mercedes is planning a Maybach ultra-luxury version of the GLS. We'll see.

I'm with you guys on that as well. Always best to see a new model in person. I have seen the dash of several GLE's and it looks a bit underwhelming. It needs more finishing or something. The X7 interior just knocked my socks off, the GLE didn't.

What is Maybach these days?
Nothing, if you compare it with Rolls or Bentley
