‘23 X7 M60i Drivetrain Malfunction

All,

The wife’s new X7 failed with a drivetrain malfunction and had to be towed in. Dealer updated the software, tested it, and gave the OK to pick it up. It failed again on the way home and had to be towed back yet again.

Dealer says it needs a new transmission. Problem is the part number changed (which happens when a redesign takes place) and the new part is not yet available. The dealer has now had the car for about 6 weeks and cannot give us an ETA on when the new part will be available.

Best I can tell (I am no lawyer) is that we are well into FL Lemon Law territory. We have no desire to go in that direction and would prefer to get our X7 back, but we are getting tired of the situation. Wife even floated swapping the X7 for an X5M - a decision I support (LOL!)

Is anyone else having similar Drivetrain Malfunction issues?

Does anyone have any experience dealing with BMW NA on issues like this?

We are a multi-BMW family with the 23 X7 M60i, 23 M240i, 21 M5 Comp, and my personal favorite, the 24 M3CS. We have owned 20+ BMWs over the years, so hopefully that counts for something!

Open to any and all ideas…

Rick

Can you share any of the check control messages that happened during failure?

I think the wife has a photo of it on her phone, but essentially it just says "Drivetrain Malfunction" and the engine shuts down completely and abruptly. Pressing start/stop does nothing.

I can only assume this has something to do with the mild hybrid unit because the ZF8 transmission is fairly bulletproof.

Since the replacement part has a new part number, this can only mean that they know it is an issue and have redesigned the part to address it.

Today marks day 48 of consecutive days in the shop. We will be calling BMWNA tomorrow.........

M-Addicted, do you mind sharing the approximate mileage that this occurred?

Also, with the new 48V mild-hybrid system on the G07 LCI's, which includes a "new" electrical motor inside the transmission for smoother start/stop, the new LCI transmission part number should differ from that of the pre-LCI....
