My 2020 X7 is stuck in the same way. However, I had my battery tested a couple months ago (just as a precaution) and was told all is copasetic.

Assuming you're on an iPhone, go to general settings, myBMW app, network settings, then toggle on 'local network'

Otherwise, the other condition is the state of charge of the battery.

Checked that too. It's connected via WiFi. So it's the battery?

After receiving the 03/2023 upgrade notice for 2021 X7 xDrive4.0i, I tried to upload the upgrade for weeks. I had to let the BMW dealer trigger the upgrade during a maintenance visit.

It looks from the picture that the upgrade has already been transferred from your phone to the car, so no reason to tinker with that. Before the car will initiate the upgrade, certain conditions need to be met. It has to be parked on the level surface, with unobstructed view of the sky (?), on M models the car will have to sit 30-60 minutes so the engine can cool off, remove all OBD diagnostic devices, parking brake should be engaged. Battery charge level also has to be correct. There appear to be some more issues with the i40 versions as it also checks the battery level of the 48V system.

I've been in this situation for a couple months now with my 2019. Sometimes it will tell me it's ready once the engine cools down, "in about 30 minutes".
Only once has it been ready to do the install. I went through the steps and pressed the buttons to start. I got out of the car then went around to get my daughter out of her car seat. I came back about 30 minutes later and the update had still not been installed with no notification of failure. Maybe closing the door, then opening a rear door paused/stopped it. Not sure why. |

Just wanted to update that I FINALLY got this resolved. I received an option to push the update through on the exit screen, followed all the instructions and it failed. Over the next few weeks I was given the option to push it through twice more - once my car had cooled down for 30 min. Both times I went back to my car after 30 min and the option disappeared.
Brought my car in for an oil change last week and asked BMW to push the update through. At first they quoted me $105 to do so, which I questioned why I should pay for a service that supposed to be free. BMW relented and did it free of charge. |

I've got a 2020 40i with the same issue. Software update is downloaded to the car but I can't seem to get it to offer an install.
I'm pretty sure it's the battery, but unsure of how to get it into a state where it will go. What level does the battery need to be for it to install? I've got a 10A charger that I've left hooked up but that hasn't seemed to make a difference. Is there any way to force the update to install using ISTA+? |

I had my X7 at the dealer to fix other issues and included my inability to install the update on the list of problems. Here are the tech notes for why I wasn't able to install the update myself.
My driveway is flat so I don't know where the > 12% gradient was encountered, but I'm glad it has been updated. |

Installing RSU under sanctions
I only had software update twice. Immediately after purchase the car was updated in the summer of 2021. And then it was updated a second time in October 2021 (07/2021.50). There were no updates after that for 2 years. Updates to navigation maps, for example, have been disabled in Russia for a long time. The last time maps were 2022.3, the third quarter of 2022. I tried to ride under the UK and German connected drive accounts, but no luck. And then the day came when I made this mega combo: German account via VPN “VPNProxyMaster” app using Netherlands servers. Cleared errors through the Bimmerlink (Error memory) on a switched off car. Reactivated the start stop function in advance (so that there were no engine errors). I don’t know what exactly was decisive, but searching for updates through the car menu finally gave the result - 03/2023.67. State of charge 12v battery was 80% by the time update over the air flew to me. And yes, the update was successfully installed by the car.

My car is going to the dealer this Friday. The updated software has been downloaded but not installed for the last 3 weeks because it says the starter battery charge is too low. We drive the car everyday to run errands and take kids to school so not sure what else I can do to get the stupid battery charged enough to install a software. What a mess!
