I was surprised that Lexus/Toyota were the only systems achieving acceptable ratings:

What an odd comment. Driver assist and FSD are already incredibly safe and as they get safer will drastically reduce traffic deaths.

BMW gave clarification around the tests performed. One of the reasons bmw got poor rating is because car wasn't monitoring the driver when driver is required to hold steering wheel. Thats is speed above 40mph on X1 drive assist.
BMW said it was designed that way and don't see a need for changing it.
The camera only is active during full drive assist under 40mph and in case of x7 and other premium models camera is active when ever full drive assist kicks in.

It is matter of expectation around safety parameters , but nothing else.

Regardless, BMW's self drive is impressive and does what it is designed to do. we don't have to second guess that for sure.

When the driver is required to hold the steering wheel, can the system be fooled, as someone else posted, by placing an orange or other input to the capacitive sensing wheel and then falling asleep? Can a driver fall asleep while their hand is in contact with the wheel?

fooling the system has nothing to do with the test.

If we are to look in that direction even seat belt clips are available to buckle and fool system. Then crash ratings should also come down.

The test at hand is how vehicle handled when allowed to drive by itself with the described boudnaries.

You’ll get a loud alert to stop driving and take a rest

Thanks. Good point! There is still an advantage to having the driver's eyes monitored.
