$41K in damage from a scrape - M50i can't believe it
I've been hesitant to post this cause it hurt so much, but I can see light at the end of the tunnel now... so here goes.
2 weeks ago I was headed out for a little vacation with my wife (first time leaving the kids behind) and wanted to quickly grab some cash, roughly 4 hours before our airport pick up. I went to pull out of an alleyway back on to the main road and stopped at the intersection because a Ford F250 was illegally parked and creating a massive blind spot to see on coming traffic. While I was STOPPED and not even at the main road, I felt a car woosh by and scrape the front end of my X7. My car didn't even move on impact but the sound was awful. The car that hit me was a blur, must have been doing 20 miles north of the 30mph town limit. A movie had just let out so about a dozen people came rushing up to me to see if I was still alive, which lead me to believe the damage looked a lot worse than I could feel inside the cabin. All of a sudden every sensor error imaginable showed up on the dash - I was afraid to look at the state of the front bumper. The driver who hit me was extremely apologetic, testified that he couldn't see me because of the Ford, witnesses corroborated...and when I walked up to his car, half of my bumper was stuck in the wheel arch of his Caravan. It was insane. I collected some of the bits off the street, drove the car home and hopped on a plane to try and sort this out in a more relaxed environment. My insurance got me a long term X7 loaner from Enterprise and I found the bodyshop that the one of the biggest BMW dealers on LI uses to do the repair estimate. I came home to the loaner on my driveway and the next day a flatbed from the bodyshop picked up my car. There weren't any structural or mechanical problems - 2 headlights, lidar, pdc sensors (and a bunch more sensors), hood and front bumper. Parts cost was about 31K, labor and calibration another 10K. 1 month to get it back to OEM perfection. The shop said its one of the worst looking but easiest repairs the've ever come across - which is somewhat heartening...I guess. I'll report back once it's all done, in the interim, I picked up the X5 LCI which looks pretty mean imho, so I'll have something fun to play with while my wife uses the loaner X7. All in all, im extremely lucky, had i been going .5 miles an hour, I'd probably be in the hospital right now or worse. The insurance took care of all the logistics. Enterprise had the car waiting for me before the body shop came to take away my damaged M50i and I trust the work that they'll do to get it back to full form. Will post once I have the Dravit monster back again! |

The headlights alone are 10K for the pair. not surprised parts alone hit 31k

Did you use the wide angle front cameras to help see if there are any oncoming cars? I find it very useful in situations like this where some ID10T parked in an area that makes seeing oncoming traffic nearly impossible.
Glad to hear you're not hurt and they were able to fix it. |

especially during the summer - caravan had a scratch, its like the wheel arch hooked the kidney and just ripped everything right off.

Just awful. Did the police give a citation to the F250 driver or he (and his insurance company) get away with it?

That guy sped off as soon as it happened. I think the town police were going to look at cc tv footage but I haven’t heard.

Did your drive recorder capture the moment of collision? Maybe the side camera captured Ford's license plate number?
BTW, did police say what driver was at fault? |

New York is considered no fault but because I was stopped and before the intersection, felt like they were leaning on the speeding driver who hit me and the illegally parked ford as the culprits. |

the crystal headlights on the 7 series are about 8K for the pair to replace.

Wow! At least your insurance can chase that guy now! You won't be able to catch who was driving but the registered owner is responsible no matter what!
I was involved in a hit an run where my tiny car got totalled. The car drove off. As the police drove me to a safe spot for pickup, I identified the car that hit me further down the road (car was abandoned). The police got the story and apparently the owner had let someone "borrow" his car. Either way, I got paid back more money than the car was worth on the open market. I hope you have similar luck! |

I fail to see how the pickup truck would be responsible for anything. You think the cops will chase him down and give him a parking ticket? And who cares if they do? You're the one who pulled out and in front of a speeding car. I'd say you're lucky if your insurance company isn't picking up the cost of repairs.

I probably would have sat further back and watched the traffic behind the truck. But that's a moot point. You pull out and put your nose into traffic, when your blind, and get hit by a car, who also can't see around the truck, and it's everyone's fault but your own?
