What should the F30 have been like?
We can all agree that the F30 3-series lost many of the great attributes that were found in previous generation 3 series. An increase in size coupled with terrible steering feel have made the 3-series feel more like an expensive family sedan instead of a sport sedan. To continue on the success of the e90, what should BMW have done to improve the e90 in the successor generation while still remaining true to the classic 3 series formula?

as the years roll by I understand the need for a larger car.. people feel the bigger the car the more it's worth their money. but i like the idea of it's not the size but the quality. f30 is indeed lighter than the e90/e92 but it is bigger. i would have liked to see the f30 come down to closer to the e46 size and lighter. i would have not mind seeing a turbo 4 pulling 300hp @ 300tq. (if the cla can get 355hp @ 332 tq, why can't bmw). This way the M(2,3,4) would have the inline 6 all to itself.. makes it that much more special. they again can have the optional LSD but should have came a lot earlier.
im probably gonna get a lot of heat for this but, im not 100% down with the always increasing HP to beat the competitor trend everyone seem to be going. you can always get lighter and it would make the chassis that much more agile. BUT at the end of the day what ever bmw would like to do. if 335i is supposed to be direct competitor with the S4 at least be comparable to it's specs. stock for stock, i see reviewers pulling towards the s4 over the 335i. |

I like the idea of modernizing the looks, especially of the interior, but they needed to maintain the high quality materials and feel of old world craftsmanship that bmw has always been known for. The very thin plastics, low quality feel surfaces and thin/light body panels like doors, hood and trunk all add up to a car that is built like every other car you would rent at Avis.

I for one think it's almost perfectly executed. Shortly after getting my E46, I thought the next step would be something akin to an E39 5-series. Bumping the 3-series up to that size class while simultaneously reducing the weight is a win-win in my books. Means I can (theoretically, anyway) upgrade into the next size class for a lower cost
That said, I can completely sympathize with those that want an E46/E90 size car to rule this class. But EPS and ASS aside, I think the F30 is pretty well done. Last edited by geko29; 06-19-2014 at 04:36 AM.. |

I'm off searching for a DD replacement for my 250k+ mile E90. The F30 didn't even make the list. It's bad Gents, bad. The E90 will remain in the fleet until parts are no longer available.

I was surprised at what it would cost to get an '08 M3 with 80k--26k according to KBB. Takiing it with a grain of salt of course.
