Tinting for dummies?

Ive never done tint on a car before but am really interested in doing it to my 335. That being said, I know nothing about tint(as Im sure a lot of others on here feel the same way) and would like a lot of input.

What brands are good, what are the different kinds within the brands, and what should each kind (on average) cost?

I got a quote from a local place that said they could do all my windows(except windshield) with 35% for about $250(giving me a deal). I asked how much ceramic would be and he said double the price.

Anyone with a lot of knowledge on the subject that can put it all in one place for everyone that might have the same questions?

I currently have 3M color shield non-metallic (35%). Not too expensive. I paid under $200 for a special. I like it and would recommend it.

What Im pretty much looking for is a list of all the brands out there and a comparison to each other. I dont know anything about who carries what and what is better than the other.

That may be difficult. You either have metallic (cheaper) or non-metallic (more pricey). Otherwise I think it's hard to compare the brands as there's always some subjectivity involved: colors may be a little different, thickness of the film may be different. What I was (and would be) more interested in is whose the installer...

Since theres like 5 tint places within 25 miles of me I dont care who the installer is(they are all reputable). I want to pick the place that uses the stuff most recommended.

Like you mentioned, why is non-metallic more expensive? What does it do better than metallic? If they are all the same % tint, whats the higher price for?

Non-metallic will not interfere with radio signals needed for comfort access and some people think even nav signals can be impacted, but I have never seen proof of that. Also non-metallic has better heat transfer and less absorption so in theory, a cooler interior. I think there is a great tint thread on this site. It's where I learned the most...good luck!!

I'm thinking of trying to tint myself. I am going to get this Kit on ebay (pre-cut) for 30 bucks shipped for practice. I'll get better tints if I really need to.

I got their clear bra kit (same seller for $65 shipped) thinking I'd use it as practice and eventually get it replaced w/ 3M. It's been pretty damn good so I haven't even considered replacing it yet! i can't tell the difference between this cheapo one and the real 3M (I have a authentic 3M pre-cut sitting there waiting just in case...)

Hyper... Let me know when you go to get it done. I have been looking and looking for a good place around here, and I have yet to find anyone. I thought I found a guy, but when I told him about putting felt on the inner seal (especially on the back), he laughed it off. But I know it is a problem, and I want felt put on as preventative against scratching. He would not do it. (I was not that upset... they use Johnston film (Not sure if it is good .))

If you find someone, let me know. And I am ready to do it NOW. All I need is the call. Perhaps we can get a few $$ off to get two cars done at once??? Worth a try...

Also, if we do this, I want a ride in your car if you do not mind.

The place I would go to is called Sound Automotive, right down the street from me. They have been doing tinting for many years. They do it for a few dealerships in the area too. My buddy just got his forrester done and it looks awesome. Problem is, they can only do it on wednesdays(thats when their tint guy comes in). So if that works for you thats cool.

Of course you can get a ride in my car(or drive it).
