Powder Coated 162, Have Mixed Feelings On The Results...

Sup Guys,

I recently powder coated my 162's silver. I had alot of curb rash and scratches from the previous owner that we're driving me insane. I have to say I wasn't to impressed with the results. I'm not sure if they all come out this way or they just did a poor job. For one, although they were clear coated the finish looks a bit flat. If I can describe it, it's almost a satin finish. When I described my concerns, the owner of the shop informed me that's generally how powder coated rims come out. He mentioned my other option would be to paint them which will give them a nice shine but wouldn't offer a lifetime guarantee. He mentioned "when you paint wheels they generally last a season, powder coating last a lifetime". While he charged me $400 to powder coat the wheels, He offered to sandblast and re-paint them for free if I wasn't satisfied with the way the wheels came out.

My question for you is, looking at the wheels do you think he did a good job? Should I get them painted instead? I am trying to obtain the original look of the wheel. My apologies for all the pics but I wanted everyone to try to get a clear picture of what the wheels look like.

Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I've had many sets powder coated, and they def were all glossy. I can assure you it shouldn't look satin unless thats the goal you were going for. They look good, but i agree not very shiny like the OEM alloy look

you can definitely get the oem look(glossy) through powdercoat.
He just didn't use the proper powdercoat, he apparently used a more matte silver.

I'd have him redo it again and confirm the color before he sprays it.

Could he put a few coats of clear coat to make them look more glossy or would he have to redo the whole process using a different (glossy) powder coat?

What about what he mentioned about painting them? How long would they generally last for if they're painted?

Some powders are multistage coatings, while others aren't. Most likely he just sprayed a base silver, and called it a day. When we powder coat our wheels silver, we typically have the powder coater apply a clear coat if applicable.

There's a chance that the powders that he orders cannot be sprayed with a clear over it to cure again.

I got them done at Dunn Sport on Boston Road in the Bronx. I heard a couple of good reviews so I decided to give it a shot. I'm not completely happy with the overall result. If they were shinier with a bit more gloss perhaps I would've been OK with it.

Paint will not be as durable as powder coating. OEM wheels are painted, however what you would find from a shop that is applying paint to your wheels wouldn't be the same as what comes from the factory that the wheels are being manufactured in. Powder coating is literally a plastic-like coating that gets cured/hardened to the surface of the wheel.
