CP/BOV question
I am in need of advice. I have an LCI 2009 335i with upgraded FMIC and am currently running the Cobb Stage 1+Aggressive FMIC map. The thing is a beast, runs well and just enough power for me. The only logical further upgrade I see are DPs.
I am running the stock CP with DVs. From what I've determined, the stock CP has no BOV, just DVs? With my mods/upgrades do I need an upgraded CP with BOV? I do not want the woosshh sound so if I do upgrade, I would like a BOV that is low key… FWIW, my car is the 6AT so the power is a bit less than if it were an MT. I do have a OCC that I'm going to install… I appreciate the input. |

You dont "NEED" a charge pipe but the stock one is prone to failure under higher boost and when it fails it's usually at the worst time. I get guys weekly asking me to upgrade their shipments for charge pipes to expedited/overnight because there car is undrivable.
Tial is the quietest BOV or Forge DV can be used as an OEM replacement. |

A CP isn't necessary but it's highly recommended. It's one of the parts that most commonly fails on this platform when the boost pressure is increased with a tune.

Slight thread-jack here, but I have two main questions about CP/BOV too,
1. For the chargepipe is the OEM c-clip style connection the most secure connection to have? i.e. won't blow off. Is it even worth looking at others that use regular clamps? 2. For the BOV it seems like people say tial is quiet, and the hks is too loud, is there anything in between? I have listened to a bunch of youtube videos but it is hard to get a sense of the actual loudness from those. I thought I read that synapse would sort of fall in the middle but it seems like no one sells those anymore. |

I'd really only consider the OEM C-clip chargepipe to be honest. The Tial is relatively quiet, the HKS isn't loud, it's just high pitched. I wouldn't consider the Synapse due to the fact that they don't function very well on this platform.

AA Charge Pipe and BOV Kit Turbo Smart Plumb Back (mates to OEM CP or Aftermarket CP utilizing OEM connections). Turbo Smart Dual Port (mates to OEM CP or Aftermarket CP utilizing OEM connections). All of the other Charge pipe offerings (ER, ETS, VRSF) can be mated with a Tial, HKS or synapse. |

I have the AA one, not that loud, but you can hear it. More of a whoosh sound w/ small bark if you're really on it. HKS one is very high pitched, but most of the Japanese ones are. Back in the day I had HKS, Greddy on other cars and they're really obvious. Also had Blitz which sounded like an angry duck.
But if you want the least noise, you're going to have to get DV's. Some BOV's do have the option to recirculate back in, but don't know if the ones available for our platform do. |

Thanks for the tip on the lip inside the charge pipe connection to the throttle body georgelb!
And thanks Jeff@TopGearSolutions, I wasn't aware of those other BOV options. I'll have to see if I can find some more information on the reliability and sound of those. The main thing I am after is a BOV that is pretty quiet during normal driving so it doesn't become annoying, but has a fairly loud sound with more spirited driving. |

So it would only make noise after you release throttle when you were previously hard on the accelerator and building boost. |

Which I guess means any of the BOVs would work for me then. Thanks! |

Since we're on this topic, what is the benefit of an aftermarket BOV? I'm not going FBO: Meth, e85, etc…My thought is to buy a beefier CP so that my oem doesn't leave me walking…and to use the stock DV if that works..

if you were going with BOV, i highly recommend Tial (and be careful of fake tials out there, I would buy it from a reputable vendor here on the forums). They are so quiet but can be noticeable if you want it to be. Once you get a hang of how it works, you will have a pretty good control of when you DO NOT want to hear the whoosh sound (ie: like when you're just cruising through a shopping plaza or neighborhood. |
