Question n54 owners...

Why do most people sell there 335i before 100k miles. I'm looking for a 335i and almost all listings have around 90k miles.
How long do these motors last?

Because you don't want to own this outside of warranty unless you are good with a wrench and have deep pockets. My CPO is up in November and I am out too, way too many frequent issues.

I'm at almost 50k miles. I don't plan to sell unless it starts being a money pit.

A couple thousand a year on repairs is still cheaper then buying a new 335i, or CPO. Get the 335i checked by a mechanic before buying or have BMW pull the service records for the car you are buying.

CPO is over after 100k and anything past 100k on your odometer is never a good thing for any car.

oh and motors last forever, but on top of motors you have turbos, electronics, suspension parts, seals, gaskets, tranny, clutch, etc.

yeah, that might be true, but usually people that are shopping for 100k+ miles BMWs, Porsches, etc, dont have few thousand a year for repairs

I take it you didn't read this thread below?

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=935010

And that was back in January.. As long as the car is maintained well, beyond the "recommended" BMW intervals you should be good.. Of course PPI is key on this or any car for that matter...

Just to add, going by your comment I guess all Honda's, Toyota's, etc., are disposable once they get to 100K - being you own an S2000, you should get rid of it if you are approaching 100K..

my point was that all cars take depreciation hit when mileage gets into 100s

and any car can run to 200-300k miles, the question is at what cost

You take a depreciation hit 1km down the road off the lot, all cars depreciate as time & mileage accumulate.

Problem with the 335 is that so many things go wrong, the people who own them under warranty or lease them from new have seen much of the bad during their term of ownership & therefore dump when warranty or lease ends.

The "sweet spot" is to find a 335 where all the big items (hpfp, injectors, turbos, evaporator etc..) have been done under warranty & the previous owner still wants to ditch the car.

I've never owned any of my BMWs out of warranty (Coincidentally they've all been N54/N55s). My current one has about 35k miles or 2 years left of warranty, I plan on getting into the M4 about 20k miles left on warranty.

It's beyond me why people sell their BMW's right after the warranty ends. You're losing more money by paying for an extended warranty or selling the car to buy another one with warranty.

I have 2 n54's both out of warranty and they're both phenomenal cars and engines. The engine itself will go way beyond 200k miles, but the twin turbo's are a concern. I wouldn't expect much more than 125k miles out of the turbo's (150k if you're lucky) and that will end up being $5000+ to repair.

However, the turbo's are not a concern for me. When mine go out I'll be totally content with upgrading to RB turbo's and having a 500+whp 335/535i.

My situation, turbo's, HPFP, wastegate all replaced under warranty. Will work on the other "breakable" stuff as time goes on.. Next is plugs, H2O pump/t-stat..

+1... The cost of buying a new car outweighs keeping your older car and paying for repairs. The opportunity cost is even greater if you can DIY...

My rear turbo went out about 1500 miles after CPO expired... BMW wanted $4500 to replace it. I gave them a middle finger and tackled the job myself. It cost me $300 for a used turbo with 15k miles, $150 for a set of gaskets + fluids, and about 25 hours of DIY labor... All that because of this little bitch in the video...

Most people will sell a car prior to 100k miles because after 100k miles the car becomes a cash car and the value drops.

If you sell before 100k miles a buyer can still finance.

I will add that with the E90 BMW really nailed it and the F30 does nothing for me.

I had a F30 328i as a loaner car and I couldn't wait to get back into my E90.

More road noise, horrible steering feel, laggy motor.

No thanks!

Same here.. turbos, injectors, HPFP, water pump and t-stat, OHFG all replaced recently for $50.00 + tax

Only thing she probably needs sooner or later are coils and walnut blasting..

But on the point of the subject.. people get rid of 335i's for the same reason people get rid of other cars by 100k.. the further you go the less desireable your car becomes on top of reliability scares.. 100k has a stigma anyways..most people feel cars don't have much more to go after that milestone

The first car I bought was a 97 pontiac grand prix GT with 167,000 miles when I was in college. I put 120,000 miles on it and sold it to a buddy of mine when it had 285,000 miles on the clock. Didn't have a single problem with it besides a coolant hose that leaked and replaced it for something like $10, and a $30 valve cover gasket leak.

Last I heard, he still has the car and getting close to 330,000 miles on it. He only had to replace the MAF sensor.

It was a Pontiac... not a BMW, and I drove the shit out of it. I would think that a BMW should at least be able to do the same...

100k miles is nothing, try 1 million miles...

100K miles is pretty modest if we're just asking "when will the motor let go". It's a four stroke, there's nothing all that exotic about it.

The real question is "how much are you willing to spend to see it past 100K". The motor is strong as hell, the peripheral parts ehhh not so much. So it's all about your willingness to pay $300, $600, $1K increments when parts inevitably fail.

Personally I plan to sell my E90LCI soon and use those sheckles for a B7/8 S4. The E88 i'm going YOLO on so i'll drive that into the ground. If the motor ever lets go, i'd probably buy a used donor unit. Love the car too much and it's already worth nothing, so at this point I don't mind.

If the car is well maintained there is no reason to sell it.
my car has been out of warranty for the last 30 000 miles and i drive it really hard ( gas mileage is 15.4 mpg ).
No major problems at all.

I currently drive a 99 GTP with rockers & a smaller pulley. Nice 13 second ride with gobs of torque & its hella cheap to repair. 150K miles thus far so long as the strut towers hold out

Looking for a 335 coupe next

the engine is fine, it's everything else I'm keeping mine so we see how far it goes. I do a lot of DIYs but I also have a local mechanic and 3rd party warranty for up to 100K miles.
