Inside pics of a N54 PCV system

I decided to replace valve cover so I cut apart old one to see how clogged/dirty PCV was and all I can say is wow! It was clogged in a lot of areas and can see how it would clog easily.

My car specs cover came off

1. 135,000 miles
2. valve cover gasket replaced once
3. always premium gas
4. Motul oil changed every 4,000 miles.
5. Extremely well maintained

Positive crankcase ventilation(PCV). It is incorporated into the valve cover. During NA operation it vents to the intake ports and the the PCV valve to the rear turbo inlet is closed. When boost is being generated the checkvalve to the intake ports is closed and the rear turbo draws the vapours out.

rob thanks for the pics. How hard to swap the cover for some sprayers and a vac pump port you think? any other weird design quirks that look like they are required?

Very interesting, thanks so much for taking these pictures. I'm wondering if they can be cleaned out without being disassembled.

Were those two pieces glued together or did they use some sort of silicone gasket?

Can you run a seafoam style product in the oil just prior to an oil change to alleviate this buildup?

I had to cut it apart with a multi-tool. They are molded together with no way to access it. I wish it was accessible. I honestly don't think blowing air or anything would help since it has to many passages.

So that connects to the PCV at the top/rear of the engine, correct? And there's another one that's in the back of the engine closer to the firewall, right?

So once you cut that open, you'd have to replace it with a new piece? Actually, I don't even know what piece(s) I'm looking at......please elaborate.

the piece I cut off is not replaceable, not serviceable. It is molded into one piece so when cut apart valve cover is junk. I just cut my old cover apart do we could see inside it.

gotcha!! So in your opinion, would a BHS OCC contribute to that, or one without a OCC?

Can't remember who, but some forum member said that BSH OCC are no good?

TIA

BHS I wouldn't get. I would say the biggest factor would be using cheap oil and not doing frequent oil changes. If I didn't do frequent oil changes, use quality oil it may have been much worse. I am sure a highly boosted car may contribute as well. I would at minimum use the RB valve/cap and BMS OCC. Some like catch cans, some hate them. I use the BMS.

Well...Shit! I've had the BSH OCC on my car for about 2 years now....So which is better: without a OCC at all, or BSH OCC?

TIA

going to do some logs to confirm but boost actually seems to come on faster and that is with the wedge flash and aggressive map 6 settings. One other thing is with leaking valve cover and cap there was oil in spark plug holes and one if my spark plugs was a bit loose but all plugs looked fine do doubt it had a impact. Use is MUCH smoother although my car idled pretty good before. Defiantly worth replacing.

It really hard to say honestly. Some love them some hate them. I personally like my BMS OCC and have had 0 issues.

Some info for people:

Rob, how'd you get a hold of my pictures!?! Lol. I did this same thing beginning of this year, but also cut apart the channel cover on the intake manifold side of the cover. Cut yours off as well and you will see some truly nasty sh*t!!!

Others, no OCC for this car will change that at all! The occ's clean the pcv air AFTER it has already left the valve cover. Also, no OCC is inline between the pcv and intake ports. So, no way of preventing intake valve gunk by using an occ. All the occ's do is help keep oil from getting sucked into your rear turbo compressor inlet...that's it.

have to agree with that, my main reason was to keep blow by out of FMIC.
